Yariv Levin – The Sad Joke at the Expense of Israel’s Citizens

Yariv Levin, who currently holds the title of “Minister of Justice,” has in recent years become one of the most polarizing figures in Israeli politics. For many, he is not merely a politician but someone who played a decisive role in weakening the state from within, making him one of the central figures responsible for the national disaster of October 7.

Levin, who branded himself as a warrior against the “judicial elite,” spearheaded moves intended to fundamentally alter Israel’s system of checks and balances. He has pushed for unprecedented interference in the judicial system, from attacks on the Supreme Court to aggressive actions against the Attorney General – including changing the locks on her office, a move more befitting a street criminal than a government minister.

The Architect of Disaster – and the Price We All Pay

Levin was busy dismantling Israel’s internal resilience. Instead of strengthening civilian and security systems, he waged internal wars that diverted attention and resources from the real challenges facing the country. The result – a weakened state, shattered national resilience, and a deeply divided society.

Continuing the Fight – Against the State of Israel

Despite mounting public criticism, Levin refuses to leave the stage. On the contrary, he has returned with the same agenda, once again attempting to push through measures widely seen as an effort to dismantle Israel’s democracy from within. In the eyes of his critics, he is nothing less than a “political saboteur” operating from inside the government itself.

Where Do We Go from Here?

Will the public continue to allow leaders like him to hold such sensitive positions of power? Can Israel afford more years of destructive internal battles while its security and societal challenges grow? These questions are becoming more urgent by the day – and the country’s future depends on the answers given to them.

Is Yariv Levin Deliberately Undermining the Justice System?

A central question troubling many is whether Levin is driven solely by personal motives or if he is acting as part of a coordinated strategy to dismantle Israel’s judicial system to free the sitting Prime Minister from an ongoing criminal trial. According to his critics, Levin’s actions stem not from a sense of statesmanship but from blind political loyalty, aimed at weakening the institutions that are meant to serve as a safeguard against governmental corruption. His series of moves – from ongoing attacks on the courts to personal measures against law enforcement officials – paints the picture of someone willing to dismantle democracy to protect one man. If this is indeed the case, it is not only a moral failure but a direct threat to the future of Israel’s judiciary and the rule of law.

The Struggle for Balance: Power, Accountability, and Democracy in the Age of Trump

Regardless of whether these prisoners are rightfully imprisoned or not, it is extremely frustrating to see someone like Trump, who has such influence and support, seemingly doing whatever he wants, even when it appears that he is violating rules and norms. It can make you feel like there is little to be done, especially when he knows how to use his power to push through what he wants, despite legal or political opposition.

However, it is important to realize that there are indeed mechanisms that can stop him, even though it may sometimes seem difficult to break through them. The rule of law and democratic institutions are designed to check power, even for figures with a lot of influence. This can be done through legal procedures, political opposition, or public pressure.

I think the current situation displays a kind of power dynamic where Trump seems to be able to do a lot. But that does not mean there are no ways to restore balance. Sometimes, it is a long process, requiring action from politicians, judges, and the broader public.

_"Venezuela's Democracy Under Siege: New Law Sparks Human Rights Concerns"_

Caracas, December 11, 2024. On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, celebrated on December 10, the radio program "Termómetro Social" (Social Thermometer), broadcast on Radio Fe y Alegría 1390 AM, addressed the risks posed by the recently approved Simón Bolívar Law, which has been criticized for its implications for fundamental rights in Venezuela.

During the program, Juan Luis Sosa, constitutional lawyer and co-host of the show along with Víctor Fuenmayor, former mayor of Ciudad Bolívar, a city located 658.3 kilometers (408.3 miles) southeast of Caracas, and retired university professor, coincided in warning about the provisions of this law that could contravene basic principles of justice and democracy.

Sosa highlighted the historical importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN in 1948, as "the essence of peaceful coexistence in modern societies". However, he expressed concern about Article 23 of the Simón Bolívar Law, which creates a list of individuals suspected of acts contrary to the regime. "For such a list to exist, there must be a prior procedure, there must be a trial," he stated, while also describing the accessory penalties of political disqualification provided for in the law, which can reach up to 60 years, as excessive.

For his part, Fuenmayor emphasized that, although the 1999 Venezuelan Constitution gave constitutional rank to the defense of human rights through the creation of the Ombudsman's Office, the effective fulfillment of this mandate is questionable. "That those who manage or direct it are outside any radius of defense of human rights is a deep discussion that we must give," he pointed out. He also criticized the fact that laws in Venezuela, such as the Simón Bolívar Law, are approved without a broad public debate, describing this procedure as "extremely dangerous for democracy".

Both hosts underscored that these provisions evoke episodes such as the controversial Tascón List, which in the past stigmatized thousands of citizens. For Sosa, the creation of such lists represents a "red line" that threatens the principles of equality and dignity established in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
