For starters, it seems a lot of people were disappointed at the lack of lumber and ropes (virtual or otherwise) that are a hallmark of a "real" barn raising, since they hadn't heard the term before.

I used the phrase because it means a "collective action of the community". And it was great to see so many community members come out and show their willingness to take collective action at last night's Pixel Crafters Barn Raising meetup.

I kicked off the evening with a little "what is Pixel Crafters" that I'll repeat here. It's a community brand -- meaning it is not really owned by anyone, other than some stewards that help organize events. There is no entity behind it, and the goal is to have it be something that the Vancouver tech community continues to "own" as an evergreen organizing banner that can be used for a variety of purposes.

Saying Vancouver tech community in this context, we generally mean the web/Internet focused companies (whether product or services).

The main asset of Pixel Crafters is the very large meetup group, which has 1300+ members. Rather than having to create a large distribution channel, we want to lend the backing of Pixel Crafters to anyone that wants to create great events and services for the community, without necessarily having to create their own distribution channel or meetup group.

Other things like this website (which anyone can post to by going to http://www.pixelcrafters.ca/submit) provide a great "default" place to put things.

There was lots of great discussion about a variety of topics that people feel passionate about that need to get better, need more help in organizing, or the desire to try new things.

Below are a handful of these items and their current status. Watch this space, the meetup group, and the new Branch-powered Vancouver Pixel Crafters group for more discussion.

We'll be adding people to a central Basecamp project space for organizing. Leave a comment if you'd like to be added or have additional notes to share - I didn't sit in on every group.

Also: virtually every one of these initiatives could use a second organizer or volunteers to make them happen. Get in where you fit in, leave a comment, ask questions - lots of ways to get involved.
