I hope you’ve figured out how to be OK with who you are and that sometimes, things just won’t go your way, and that doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough. Right now, you don’t focus nearly enough on the things you do right. You never give yourself enough credit, but you’re working on it. I hope by now, you’ve found the way, and I hope you’re proud of yourself. You should be.
You always had big dreams. You’ve wanted to be the same thing since you were 11 years old. And guess what? You did it. You did it a long time ago. But when you got there, you spent all your time thinking that it wasn’t enough, that you should be bigger places, doing better things. I hope that you got all the things you dreamed about. But if you didn’t, I hope you learned that you didn’t fail. I hope you learned that sometimes you can be good enough and still not get to where you think you should be. And that’s OK. Sometimes, it’s about being happy where you are, and remembering all of the things you’ve done you’re proud of, and how very, very lucky you are to get to do what you love everyday. I hope that now, you remember to hold onto that in the bad days. I hope you learned how to let yourself be happy.
I truly hope you believe in yourself. Not in knowing that you’re good at what you do — you’re aware of that already — but that you’re good enough, that your opinions are valid and your knowledge is enough and you can do all the things I thought we could never do. Do them. Takes risks. Believe in yourself. Please do all the things I don’t do now. Make me proud.
More than anything, and perhaps that’s where this letter was going all along, I hope you stopped comparing yourself to the people around you, to the people you saw as being ahead of you career wise, to your sister, to your friends who seem have it altogether, to the girl in the bar with the perfect dress and the perfect smile. You’re enough, always have been. I hope you know that, that you’ve fully embraced it, that you no longer second guess and agonize over every move you make. If you still do that, please stop. You made it this far. You’re doing something right. Have confidence in yourself. You’ve earned it.
P.S. I hope you got a loft apartment like you always wanted and filled it with dogs.
