in this song, sam discusses the state of the world in a political sense and the near constant misconstruction of the subject matter from the media news sources and public officials that we are supposed to be able to trust. he paints the perfect picture and then puts one alarming fact in big, bold lettering for us: we don't give that much of a shit.

the opening verse illustrates where our priorities lay. drugs, big-money corporations, and pop culture trends. he tells us this and then admits, "i am not the first to live with wool over my eyes." we aren't distracting ourselves---we're purposefully ignoring the damning truth for the sake of our own sanities.

"the silver tongue suits and cartoons that rule my world are saying it's a high time for hypersonic missiles" is a painfully accurate lyric. these silver tongue suits, in my opinion, are the money-hungry politicians spewing things that only benefit "their side" of the playing field, only voicing opinions when it sways towards what the public wants to hear. the cartoons that rule our world is the media. in the past decade, we have purposefully tuned out the news. we no longer wake up and check the weather on local news stations and when the channel is playing in restaurants or public locations, we groan and roll our eyes, saying something like, "it's always something bad."

because it is. it is always something bad. just like sam describes, this is a high time for hypersonic missiles. it's fear-mongering and scheming and calculated tactics to control mass opinion.

this song was released in 2019 by a man from north shields, united kingdom. i'm not sure where you are, but i can assume your life and your resonation with these lyrics can't differ all that much. i wonder, does that make me a "nihilist?"

despite all of this, the main message behind "hypersonic missiles" is not the dull state of international affairs. it's finding meaning, a real sense of humanity, and closeness through human relationship.

"this world is gonna end, but 'til then, i'll give you everything i have."

and you should. you should give everything, everything that you have.
