Part 3 of my Majoras Mask styled alternate world for BotW! Something a bit different, and not rooted (heh) in BotW - decided to shove all the various Forest Creatures into one big pokemon family. Baba -> Korok -> Scrub -> Kokori/Skullkid. Had a lot of fun adapting the Deku Princess from Majora's Mask to fit with the new ideas~
I've missed the Deku Scrubs for so long and was thrilled to see them back in Echoes of Wisdom. Awesome little guys deserve more love (and should have been in Botw/TotK. Like yeah, the Rito redesign is far improved from Windwaker but, cmon. Scrubs are just way cooler than Bird!)

Linktober Day 4 - Nostalgia
When I was around 10, Skyward Sword was technically the first Zelda game I touched. I played on my mum’s unfinished save file running around Faron Woods killing these guys with the motion controls with no clue what the objective was ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
attack for @/rosesposting on twt! might be my last one… or might do some sketch attacks later

Deku baba
Also re the Deku Kingdom Obviously Deku Scrubs and Deku Babas are all part of this kindgom, but so too is the Deku Tree itself. The difference is the Deku Tree is a Deku who chose the path of enlightenment and peace, and grew massive, while most Deku Scrubs are more shallow, self-absorbed, and temperamental and therefore die younger from in-fighting or recklessness (side-eyeing you, little lovesick Deku who jumped into the rift to be with his sweetheart in EoW, you will always be famous to me).
However, all Deku have an innate resistance to dark magic that largely exempts them from Ganon's spell to force their loyalty. Monster biologists speculate this is because the Deku originated in the Lost Woods, which confuses all sorts of magic that tries to get in. Scrubs may still serve his ends, but often do so from cowardice or greed and will metaphorically jump ship at the first sign of trouble or inconvenience. Because of their unreliability, as Ganon gains more power he will often replace fickle Scrubs with more loyal monsters (the path to the Sacred Forest Meadow, for example, changing from Mad Scrubs to Moblins in OoT; Deku Scrubs disappearing by the time of BotW; etc.)
Notably, in a world where Ganondorf is absent, Deku Scrubs set up their own actual kingdom, and the Deku Princess there is likely to go the path of the Great Deku Tree in the future (though her temper remains an obstacle). In Hyrule, the Scrubs rarely have enough peace to fully develop a monarchy, but can have relations with Hyruleans ranging from mostly-avoidant to fully integrating into their society and opening businesses. Some Hylians even find their tempers kind of funny.
Mad Scrubs are Deku Scrubs that have fully lost themselves to their anger, like a berserker, which causes physical strain to their body and will slowly kill off their leaves and eventually them. They can come out of the maddened state, but the changes are permanent by that point. Deku Baba are the Deku equivalent of attack dogs--not as intelligent, but protective of the places they are planted. Deku grown in the wild away from Deku Scrub tending can get very large and sometimes mutate in weird ways (Big Babas in TP, Babas in WW and SkSw). Kalle Demos is perhaps the most egregious example, though Ganondorf was likely interfering with its growth to make a super monster. Diababa was also an attempt by Ganondorf to make a more loyal Deku-Twili hybrid. Manhandla is the closest he got to commanding a Deku Baba, but it was still... erratic.
