Ayana: Nicole calmate damn it!

Deja: *mumbles* Shit. *looks behind Nicole and sees Steve standing there then quickly walks towards him*

Nicole: *turns around to them* Why you running towards him?! You can’t run now!

Ayana: *steps in front of Nicole* Niña, you better calm that ass all the way down.

Nicole: Girl please, you ain’t gon do nothing to me.

Steve: Dee? Baby what’s going on?

Deja: *whispers* It’s- *sighs deeply* it’s nothing. Can you wait for me inside please? I promise I’ll get to you when I solve this and-

Steve: How you want me to leave when I’m hearing fighting threats? Like people can hear y’all yelling all the way across the street.

Nicole: *slightly tilts head* That’s because she don’t know how to mind her damn business!

Deja: *turns abruptly* Nicole shut up!

Nicole: *walks around Ayana* How about you advise your girl to never get into my life by go seeing my man!

Nicole: *gasps* You bitch! *reaches her hands to grab Deja but stopped by Ayana*

Two days later...

Ayana: *looks at the sky then watches cars pass by* You know my anthropology prof only gave me an 80 for that assignment I stayed up all night to do?

Deja: Yan, that is still pretty good for doing it all in one night. *flips page*

Ayana: *tsk* Me losing sleep for any assignments should already be a 90 percent minimum.

Deja: Says who? Is that a school policy we ain’t know about?

Ayana: Just precisely. *picks up phone from lap then scrolls through*

Deja: *chuckles a bit* Stop distracting me will you?

Ayana: What are you reading anyways?

Deja: A book about The Black Panthers.

Ayana: That’s what’s up. Ain’t there a movie touching base about it that’s releasing sometime soon? With Daniel Kaluuya right? *puts phone down and looks at the view again*

Deja: Mhm, yes ma’am. And the bae Lakeith.

Ayana: Hahaa, bae. Let Steve find out. 

Deja: Oh girl hush, a crush celebrity ain’t gonna hurt.

Ayana: Mm, chica you right. I mean can we please talk about Benjamin Bratt and how fine he is.

Deja: *screws face* Girl?

Ayana: What? That is a fine specimen. 

Deja: You’re pushing it. *looks at Ayana* I mean out of all the male actors.

Ayana: Ay hermana, leave my man out of this.

Deja: Right. You talking about Steve when Lewis should know about this.

Ayana: *laughs* Listen-

Following week...

Deja walks in the bar then proceeds to sit on the stool. Pulls out phone and checks the time.

Bartender: Welcome miss. *rearranges glasses* Anything you’d like?

Deja: Uh, no thanks. *looks around* I won’t stay here for long anyways.

Bartender: *chuckles a bit* You coming to visit a bar without having anything? Not even a shot?

Deja: Like I said before sir, the answer is no.

Bartender: *whistles lowly* Have it your way ma’am.

Deja stares at him walking away then shakes head. Few moments later then crosses legs and sighs impatiently.

...: Well well well, if it isn’t the beautiful best friend awaiting for my arrival. *walks towards the stool beside Deja*

Deja: *scoffs while rolling eyes then turns a bit* Well if isn’t the arrogant know-it-all.

...: *sits and chuckles* Arrogant? Mm, I thought I was on your good side Deja Korps.

Bartender: *clears throat* Welcome boss, the usual?

...: *smiles at the bartender* Kenny my man. For sure but uh, how come you didn’t serve my guest?

Kenny the Bartender: Oh trust me sir, I tried but-

Deja: I told him I didn’t want any cause I’m not staying here for long anyways. *cuts eyes at Kenny*

...: *smirks* It’s alright my man, the usual. *watches Kenny make his drink. Looks back at Deja* You looking really nice though, we having a date night?

Deja: Please don’t flatter yourself.

...: Aye I mean, *grabs drink and sips* you’re the one that called me so I must be fine enough. 

Deja: Look, I called you for a reason and I wanted to make it fast Karlton. I’m sure you don’t want your time wasted.

Karlton: Nah sweets, you don’t waste my time. *sips drink again then turns a bit* How may I be of service?

Ayana: What?

Deja: What you mean wh- you promised you were gonna be nice.

Ayana: *scoffs* I did?

Deja: *sighs* Please stop playing. Y’all both agreed that we were going to start being nice around here.

Nicole walks in the kitchen from her bedroom then speaks in a high pitch voice. 

Nicole: Yeah Yana, you promised.

Ayana: *puts her arms down while squinting her eyes* Well good morning to you too trick.

Nicole: *laughs out loud* Damn.. guess I’ll take that one.

Ayana: Yeah, after using three of my clean towels for no explanation last night, that’s all the nice you getting from me.

Deja: *interrupts before Nicole speaks up* Hey Nic. I went to check the mail earlier and saw there was a couple of them for you.

Nicole: Mm, thanks babe. *walks towards the table*

Deja looks at Ayana and communicates silently to speak to Nicole but then Ayana shakes her head and quietly says “no”.

Deja: Lemme go get ready then. *side eyes Ayana while walking away to her room*

Ayana: *sighs quietly then smiles* Hey Nic.

Nicole: *turns around* We actually saying hi now? Wow.

Ayana: Girl. *scratches bottom lip* I just wanted to know if uh, you wanted to come with us to check out this new store my friend told me about.

Nicole smirks then snickers while looking away.

Ayana: *frowns* Did I miss the joke?

Nicole: *looks back at Ayana* No joke, just *shrugs* wondering if you actually want me with y’all or you’re getting forced to ask me you know.

Ayana: Nic.

Nicole: Stop pretending to be nice Ayana, I get the message now.

Ayana: No, you got it wrong. I want you to chill with us.. besides I...

Nicole: *raises an eyebrow while waiting for Ayana* You.. what?

Deja: *walks back in kitchen with a smile* Alright y’all, we heading out? 

Nicole: Y’all go ahead, I actually gotta step out somewhere else in an hour. *walks away*

Ayana: *shakes head and quickly grabs keys* Let’s go. *walks away*

Deja: *groans while tilting head upwards* Whyyy...

Following year...

Ayana walking out after closing the bathroom door and stops when spotting Deja in the kitchen.

Ayana: Ohh Dejaaa..*smiles*

Deja: *creases eyebrows while throwing something out* If there was any of your belongings that is broken or lost, just know it wasn’t me.

Ayana: *snickers* Now why should I think that?

Deja: Uhh, pft, nothing. *turns around* Am I.. still in trouble for something?

Ayana: Tsk, girl stop thinking the most right now and hear me out, damn.

Deja: Alright my bad, *laughs a bit* what’s up?

Ayana: I just need someone to go check out this new store that opened. Now, my classmate thinking it’s a Fashion Nova opening but I do-

Deja: *rolls eyes while turning around* If you didn’t believe it in the first place, why did you want to check it out th- wait a minute now.

Ayana: What? *reaches up to try and grab a snack*

Deja: You were tryna see Lewis weren’t you?

Ayana: *turns around abruptly* What?! No.

Deja: Is that your final answer?

Ayana: *sighs then turns once again reaching up* He.. just wanted to quickly hand me something.

Deja: Mhm. Well.. I support y’all so let’s go.

Ayana: We can go as soon as I grab this damn, *jumps* chip bag. Why y’all putting things so damn high up?

Deja: Nuh uh that wasn’t me. Psh, please, I’m as short as you.

Ayana: *kisses teeth* Probably Nicole stupid high ass.

Deja: Let’s just get this out of the way as soon as possible. Uh...

Karlton: Do I make you nervous dear?

Deja: Just.. please knock it off with the names.

Karlton: *raises both hands for a moment* As you wish.

Deja: Karlton I don’t know you but I’m only saying this because I’m a friend that cares. I want you to leave Nicole alone.

Karlton slightly freezes in position and stares at Deja.

Deja: *starts feeling uncomfortable* I- I know you heard me.

Karlton: *clears throat then chuckles* You know, I gotta give you some credit for having some balls to tell that to my face miss Korps.

Deja: Call it what you want, but I-

Karlton: Did she send you here to tell me this bullshit?

Deja: *raises an eyebrow* No. I did. *scoffs* Do you possibly think I want to see her come back home every single night looking high just for your ass to abuse her?

Karlton: *leans closer to Deja* So you coming to my face, not only to tell me to leave my girlfriend alone but you claiming I abuse her too?

Deja: Stop being delusional asshole, she has bruises all over her body.

Karlton stands up abruptly then drinks from his glass until he finishes.

Deja: *stands up* Oh I’m making you nervous now? I mean you can’t always hide from the truth.

Karlton: *nods and crosses arms*  Well how about you understand this, real slow. I have a business, and when someone owes you something, you expect it to be given back. Nicole has yet to provide it therefore she can’t leave.

Deja: What the hell Karlton, she’s supposed to be your girlfriend! Not your damn worker where you can use her as a punching bag when you didn’t get your shit.

Karlton: She know what she signed up for anyway.

Deja: *deeply sighs* How much Karlton? Huh? 2000? 3? How much for your ass to leave her alone?

Karlton: *smirks* That’s actually generous of you to go that far to save your girl but uh, *looks away briefly* unfortunately that’s only a fraction of how much she owes. Mm, by the way, does *looks back Deja* Steve know you here?

Deja: What does that have to do with anything?

Karlton: Nothing I was just wondering. *smiles*

Deja: Your ass go anywhere near hi-

Karlton: Then don’t tell me what I can or can’t do with my relationship. Hm? *raises eyebrow*

Deja: *shakes head* Fuck you. *walks away rapidly*

Karlton: Kenny. *waits until Kenny comes closer and hears him say: Boss* Go get my second phone in my office please. *looks back at the window*

Sunday morning...

Deja unlocks the door and checks the surroundings. After nodding with approval, she then carries her belongings and heads up the stairs. Quietly says “Look at this view” and puts her things down to proceed to text Janess for arrival.

Deja: *calls back Ayana* ...Hey Yana. Sorry I missed your call, I just got to the place.

Ayana: No worries hermana. Was everything okay? Flight, everything?

Deja: It went well, pretty quick cause we’re not too far from it right? So..- *hears the door open and Janess say “I’m heeere!”* Lemme talk to you later Yan.

Ayana: Yeah, text me later babe.

Deja: *ends call and turns around in time to see Janess coming up the last step* Cuzzo!

Janess: Baby girl, hey! *walks towards Deja and hugs for a while. Lets go* Look at you! Shit... when was the last time we’ve seen each other? You taller than me, glowing and everything, damn.

Deja: *laughs* Cuzzo stop. But I think the last time was when I was 15.

Janess: Holy, *shakes head* that’s crazy. Well welcome to Toronto, *smiles* first time and everything right? How was the flight?

Deja: It was okay, went pretty quick and everything but you know me and flying don’t go well together.

Janess: *puts phone and keys on counter* I understand completely. Next time, it’s a bus flex then yeah.

Deja: Definitely. *looks around* This house is hella nice by the way.

Janess: Girl yes, it looks great. *looks around as well* I had to pull the ropes from different people and this girl recommended this airbnb so I’m glad! *looks back at Deja* Now I know it’s only Sunday but you got your ouftits ready for everything?

Deja: The only outfit I’m actually stuck on is the one for next Monday but I do have everything else.

Janess: Alright, s’all good. Let’s worry about that tomorrow actually cause we still have time? *hears phone vibrate. Picks it up* Tsk, let me bring my stuff in while I call this headache of mine.

Deja: *chuckles* Reminds me I got to call mine and let him know.

Janess: Oh yeah, you got a ting! *starts heading downstairs* You gonna tell me all about it.

Deja smirks then turns towards the window walking closer to watch and admire the view.

Two-thirty in the afternoon...

Steve: *holds Deja while walking around the park* When are you leaving for Toronto again?

Deja: I’m going there on Sunday. *smiles while looking up at Steve* I’m so excited to see my cousin, *shakes head then looks away* I don’t know when was the last time we saw each other.

Steve: The one who with the basketball player right? Does she live far?

Deja: Yeah that’s her. And not really, it’s near New York so only two hours away? It’s cause she’s so busy, she barely has time for anything these days.

Steve: I see. *lets go and stretches arms* All I know is when you get there, you better behave.

Deja: *squints eyes* Don’t I always?

Steve: *chuckles* I’m not saying that but ah, playing mas is a different experience. Well, especially back home in Bahamas.

Deja: Mhm, I definitely need to go there or Jamaica.. just somewhere to experience that fully for next year.

Steve: Mm you better make sure I’m coming then cause.. *shakes head* But aye, you ain’t show me any outfits you wearing when you get there.

Deja: Uhh, *scratches back of head while looking away* it’s a surprise? *hears Steve says “Deja.”* Whaaat? *tsk* At least just know that the part of the costume reps your country’s colours.

Steve: Oh word? *nods* Well that’s dope then, I approve.

Deja: *rolls eyes then mumbles* No choice anyways.

Steve: Haha, very funny. *pulls out phone to look at the time* Gotta head back soon to grab something to eat.

Deja: Yeah... *slightly furrows brows while scrolling down her phone. Kisses teeth then closes and puts phone away* I know I’m- *shakes head*

Steve: Baby. *looks down at her with concern*

Deja: *sighs* I’m just getting annoyed with the whole Nicole thing, like just sick and tired of her telling me she’s hurt somewhere on her body.

Steve: *deeply sighs while shaking head* You starting to get annoyed? *laughs dryly*
