This is a Keralan festival where certain devotees become possessed by Kali, becoming her oracles (the guys do this in drag, BTW, and usually there are more female oracles than what this video would have you think, check out the related videos for the women oracles), and their assistants run around yelling rude jokes to please the Goddess. The possession involves lascivious dances and the oracles draw blood from their bodies in trance states. Undone hair, poking out your tongue and shaking your hips are considered extremely, disgustingly unladylike and filthy in rural India. Watch this and the related videos to get an idea of the level of frustration and repression that surges out from people when they can finally let it all out. Much better a way to let out explosive, violent energy through religious means than suicide bombings, don't you think? I just hope none of the stuck-up so-called “reformers”--who hate this kind of stuff and want to kiss the arses of the more Puritanically-minded Christians and Muslims and Vaishnavas (yes, I know there are liberals among all those groups, but I mean the mainstream)--will never be able to ban this.
