With a loud bang, Kara slams the balcony door close behind her. She arranges the contents of her many bags on the dining room table.
Alerted by the bang, Lena curiously makes her way out of her home office to see what’s going on. Usually Kara slamming doors can mean one of two things. One, something bad happened and she’s trying to control her anger. Two, something bad happened and she’s in need of some tlc.
“What is this?” Lena gestures to all the food on the table.
“For the pregnancy cravings,” Kara states simply as she continues putting down more cartons and boxes. When the table runs out of space she moves on to the counter and keeps adding to the already massive amount.
“You’re not pregnant.” Lena cannot entirely hold back an amused chuckle. She’s used to her wife’s antics and misunderstandings of some of earth’s quirks by now.
“I know. It’s not for me.”
Lena quirks an eyebrow. “I’m not pregnant either.”
“What’s the food for then?”
Kara finally looks up, having finished taking everything out of bags. “Practice. I need to know where to get the best stuff for when you are.”
“You don’t know how long that might take. The first round of IVF doesn’t have that big of an success rate. It could take years before I’m pregnant. It could go wrong before I even reach the cravings stage. I might never get pregnant.” Lena starts ranting, emphasising her words with wide arm gestures and restless pacing.
“Lena,” Kara says, her voice exuding so much love but it falls on death ears.
When Lena doesn’t stop her pacing and frantic worrying of her hands, Kara steps into her space, forcing her to stop.
“Baby, I know. I just want to be prepared. We might get lucky and I don’t want to be unprepared when we do. Now, would you please sit down and try some of these pastries. Tell me which one you like best.” Kara manoeuvres Lena to a chair and pushes a box in her hands filled with every pastry Lena could imagine and then some.
“You can still enjoy food even if you’re not pregnant. Please let me have this moment,” Kara pleads, pulling a carton with potstickers to herself.
“I’m not sure this is how cravings work. I don’t think pregnancy makes you crave your favourite food. Just really weird stuff.” Despite her words, Lena still digs into one of the pastries.
“Then you better taste a little bit of everything because I can’t have you crave something but not know what it is. I’d fly across the world for you, you know that. But I can’t get you something when you don’t know what it is you want.” Kara shoves two potstickers in her mouth at the same time as soon as she finishes talking.
Overcome with Kara’s dedication, Lena swallows heavily, the pastry suddenly going down a little harder than before. She abandons it on the table and moves into Kara’s personal space, leaning over to steal a sloppy kiss as soon as Kara has emptied her mouth.
“I love you. I’m not going to try everything on the table, though. I’d rather keep the ballooning up for the last stages of pregnancy. But I’ll try new stuff if that makes you feel more comfortable. The pastry is really good.”
“I love you too,” Kara replies automatically but with so much love it feels like she’s saying it for the first time. “I think you’ll like the cocoa beans too.” She pushes a bag towards Lena before taking hold of another container and starting on that, putting the empty potstickers carton to the side.
“Thank you. Do you want to watch a movie while you eat? I’m done working for today.”
Kara nods, mouth still filled and a noodle hanging out of it before she slurps it up. Lena shakes her head with a smile. She can’t believe she married this gluttonous dork but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
