Very specific question ahead but would just like some advice plz! So I’m in Year 12 hoping to apply to Oxbridge, but with a deferred entry, because after I finish my A-Levels I want to have a Spinal Fusion (correction) surgery (not out of choice, but medically needed due to pain etc), which would take 6-8 months to recover from, is this a reasonable way to pretty much waste that year? Will it put me at a disadvantage (my main question lol) Any thoughts would be very helpful, thank you!!
(Part 2) I’m not even 100% positive Oxbridge allows gap years, but what is the success rate of getting in? Is it lower than “normal” applicants going straight to Uni? Thank you!!!!!x
Firstly, I’m sorry to hear that you’re going to have to go through that surgery - I hope that it goes well for you.
I don’t think that any university would see that as a ‘wasted’ year, so you should be fine to apply for deferred entry, and it wouldn’t put you at a disadvantage. Oxbridge definitely do allow gap years and deferred entry applications (I am the living proof), but I don’t know what the success rate is. I don’t really know how you should mention it in your application, as the personal statement is not really the place, but at least in the SAQ there is an ‘any additional information’ box, so you could write about it there - there might be an equivalent section on UCAS, but I can’t say for certain. I don’t think it would count as an extenuating circumstance, because it would be happening after your exams.
All in all, I’d say that applying for deferred entry in your circumstances would be absolutely fine, but you might want to email admissions people at the unis you’re planning to apply to to find out how you should let them know in your application that the gap year is for a medical reason (as in, do you need to send an extra letter, mention it on UCAS, that sort of thing), as otherwise they might be confused when there’s no mention of plans in your personal statement.
