Security is paramount with Defenders this day and age. Mainly because they are easy to steal. With a recent spate of thefts in the surrounding area it was imperative to react, though any device acts as a deterrent i think the longer it takes them to figure out how to steal would just increase the chances of getting caught. So a pedal lock plate from Paddock was ordered for the 90 as I feel this is the more desirable of the two defenders. Though it’s not a necessity an upgraded fuel-cap was a nice detail to add.
30th December 2017 - MAF & CCA 90 - Top end felt flat in the 90 whilst cruising on the motorway, any acceleration above 50mph felt gutless, so i plugged in the Lynx diagnostics in and noticed the idle value the MAF should be is between 55 and 65 Kg/Hr, weirdly enough the lynx was indicting 4kg/hr which is very low.
A good way to also test if the MAF isn't working and you don't have access to a diagnostic tool, is unplug the sensor and take it for a drive, if after unplugging the sensor the truck behaves as before then the sensor is potentially packed in, as the ECU will be running of default parameters.
So i did some research on what are healthy values and as previously stated 55/65KG/Hr is good 4 indicates the MAF is broke and is in fact sending the incorrect data to the ECM which electronically maps the engines fuel/air ratio. If the MAF with shows 0 or 4 kg/hr just replace.
Conclusion: After a test drive the 90 drove smooth and pulled well.Â
110 - A thorn in my side is what 110 ownership is becoming, 7am starts are now daunting as the truck will struggle and  eventually turn over after 3-6 cranks/turn of the key. This had been already reviewed at Exmod in Stourbridge and the claim due to the fitment of A/C and another alternator has increased the load on starting the truck. It’s not i don't trust mechanics but i just feel sometimes have they actually done anything or even bothered to delve into the issue enough, not to forget to mention this was part of a warranty fix which clearly wasn't fixed.
Exmod said they had changed all o-rings and seals on the injectors and changed the glow plugs to eradicate the start issue... not solved. But i noticed the battery had a rather low Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) of 700 now clearly for 110 this isn't a good start. Luckly eBay had a once in a blue moon 20% off buy it now items, jumped on this deal and picked up a Odyssey PC2150 with a CCA of 1150 which is 450amps more than what i originally had. Conclusion: Reduced attempts by 50% but still won't turn over first turn of the key.
