Don't say it.
And down by the brimming river I heard a lover singUnder an arch of the railway: ‘Love has no ending...
Remy can't compete with the memory of Pepper Potts, and he would never want to. And Tony needs someone, yeah, but Tony needs someone better. He's Tony Stark. He's Iron Man. Remy had never meant for this to go this far.
And it's dangerous. The tabloid Remy is holding is proof enough of that: STARK'S MYSTERIOUS NEW BEAU? is scrawled across a photo of him and Tony at a Stark Industries event two nights ago, both of them with champagne, leaning against the banister of the balcony so that they're both only barely lit with the golden light spilling from the ballroom. Tony is smiling, pushing a lock of Remy's hair behind his ear. His hand mostly obscures Remy's face, at least, and Remy has invested in some good contacts since he got off Antarctica, but someone could still recognize him.
Tony comes up from the workshop just as Remy has finished reading the tabloid article, which was trash anyway. The photo was clearly taken from across the street, Remy is basically unrecognizable, but this won't be a one-time event. Everything could all come crashing down around Remy's ears at any second. Damn if Remy is going to wait around for Tony to finish what Rogue started.
"Dis is a bit much fo' me," Remy says, putting the tabloid down on the breakfast bar where Tony has to look before he gets to the coffee machine. Only because Remy is a capable liar does he manage to say, "It ain't your fault, but... dis all jus' ain't going to work out, Tony, real sorry," without his voice betraying that he feels anything but mild disappointment about breaking up.
