it is immediate, this answer that bursts from jung haejin's lips. with the room's lights dimmed, shadows take their chance to play across his skin. silence stretches like taffy on a well-oiled machine, metaflux glimmering in the corners of his eyes. it is not an evol-driven past that spreads out before him but a memory-held one. of victory and loss and the thrum of determination to bring everyone home. even if it was just their soul-empty bodies towed in from a wanderer storm.
"i cannot efficiently and effectively do my job if i must dig the truth out of a liar's broken jaw."
haejin blinks for a moment. his throat clears faintly, masking a crack of amusement across his professional demeanor.
"are you referring to the three analyst characters they squished myself and my nine other colleagues into?"
visually, delta's captain seems to think on the question. and yet, there is a shadow of something that lends to a... different interpretation. he speaks again after a few seconds of silence.
"no comment."
he offers his hand in a parting shake and bids the asker farewell.
there is a howling in his head. persistent. enduring. high and haunting as it sinks its claws into fragile pinna and cochlea. a ghastly, tenaciously immutable thing that echoes through empty city streets; bouncing against freshly fallen concrete and resonating with his brother's bitten off screams.
it lingers, even as time's vast ocean swallows the years in its watery maw. whispering in the corners of his night-darkened bedroom, buzzing through hellishly florescent corporate meeting rooms, sighing a the sun begins another descent.
and yet —
"frighten?" jung haejin carefully sets the cup in his hand back to its saucer with a faint clink. he looks to the distance, eyes tracing impossible colors and the secrets they tell.
"no."
his voice is firm, unwavering, studying the face of the person across from him.
"they are pests that hunters have a duty to dispose of."

it takes a moment to weigh both options, as choosing one does not discount the merit he finds in the other. he’s been lucky ( a word admittedly often used to describe him ) to have experienced a glimpse into both worlds; while he’s not the most persuasive person of those he surrounds himself with, he does know how to work a room and win others over, and while he wasn’t born wealthy, he was been able to experience a cushy upbringing towards the later years of his childhood. but if it came down to a choice between one or the other, he still thinks that he’d choose a silver spoon. there are just some things that a silver tongue cannot buy. while some may claim that money cannot buy happiness, generational wealth is in and of itself a whole separate matter. to be born with a silver spoon is to be have a network of resources and credibility in a world before you step into it, and that’s something that soohyuk does not take for granted.
even so, if he were to decide in a scenario that was not so hypothetical—that is to say, if he were choosing for himself, if he were to go back in time and start anew—he would not change anything about his current state or his past upbringing. he’d choose neither option: neither a silver spoon nor a silver tongue. sometimes the most valuable choice is relatability, which lends itself to reliability and a perceived sense of trustworthiness, even if that means giving up on having an advantage.

how many backup plans do you have at any given time ?
it depends on the scenario. in a perfect world, there would be no necessity for any backup plans, but having an evol like soohyuk’s comes with the implicit acknowledgment of life’s unpredictabilities and risks. soohyuk’s ideal plan is one that’s both well thought-out—with every branching decision and action based on the likelihood of the choice that was taken before it—and flexible enough to allow for last minute changes. of course, such a pursuit is easier said than done, especially with the unpredictable nature of battling wanderers. still, when it comes to on-field missions, soohyuk prefers the clarity of having fewer, well-fleshed-out plans rather than the chaos of having many back-up plans that depend on various contingencies. he does, however, try to account for a plan that accounts for a disaster scenario where everything goes to shit—it’s important to at least have an escape plan, even if just having one doesn’t guarantee success, and the recent loss of lives that occurred during operation pandia has only put that reminder in stark focus.

more than any singular, specific trait, soohyuk values a mutual sense of trust. he values partnerships where his partner puts faith in his abilities as much as he can put faith in theirs. perhaps if pressed for a specific answer, he’d say competence, combined with the sort of humility that allows one to be an effective team player. while his evol does work in individual scenarios—where he works independently—soohyuk believes that it’s only as part of a partnership or within a team that its true potential can be unlocked.

SJ: Personal plans, rarely. If I've paused a plan, I'm probably not gonna follow through. If it wasn't important enough the first time, it's not gonna be the second. I don't like distractions, or having to drop something and pick it back up again, it's just not how I work. And if I want to return to something, chances are I'll try to restart whatever I was doing, no matter if I'm researching a new dishwasher to buy or whatever else.
At work, all the time, but it depends on the project and who I'm working with. Sometimes it's just better to circle back to something later. But even then, I'll think about it: would it not be doable now, when we're already thinking about it? If the resources or time just aren't there, it's a non-brainer, but I don't like having long to-do lists getting even longer.
