HIHIIH!!! I saw your post replying to your moot, and they mentioned you wanting asks, and I remembered wanting to ask something then completely forgetting..
SO HERE I AM REMEMBERING AGAIN !!
What's your favorite aspect about your favorite piece of media and why does it mean so much to you? <3
HIIIII!! Thank you so much for the question!
I don’t think I could ever pick a favorite piece of media because I love soo much stuff, but the most meaningful to me is probably Thunderbolts* so that’s what I’m going to talk about to answer this question :)
I am a HUGE superhero fan because I love how the genre can explore ideas of human nature through a lens that isn’t possible in our regular world. Specifically ideas about mental health, what motivates people to be heroes, and what makes a hero a hero. All of these concepts are explored beautifully in Thunderbolts. I actually think the tagline for the movie perfectly encapsulates what I love about it, “not super, not heroes, not giving up.” What makes a superhero a superhero is not the their super abilities or their recognition as a “hero”, but the fact that they keep getting back up after constantly being pushed down, always try and do what’s best, they never give up, because that’s all you can do. Everyone in the movie has all been through terrible shit, none of them have any reason to try and save the world when the world has done nothing but antagonize them, they don’t owe anyone anything, but they all still try and save everyone, they never give up. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is just get out of bed and try, try to keep living without the void consuming you.
On a more personal note, while I loved Thunderbolts when it came out, I reconnected with it last fall. I started my freshman year of college in August and I did not have the best time. It was the most alone I had ever been in my life. I just couldn’t seem to connect with anyone around me or make any friends. I would see people hanging out all over campus, hear laughing though the dorm walls in the night, and see Instagram post from people I went to high school with hanging out with all of their new friends. All I could think is “what’s wrong with me?” This is where I started thinking back to the summer and to Thunderbolts again. Literally the first line of the movie is Yelena saying “I think there is something wrong with me.” I related to Yelena sooo much, especially her speech to Alexi about being alone. And the movie gives me hope too, because Yelena felt the same way I do, but she got out, she worked through it, and showed me what I’m feeling isn’t set in stone, and maybe one day I won’t feel so alone too. Second semester of college wasn’t any better than the first, but I’ve been learning to find the good in my life instead of comparing myself to others and my expectations, trying to resist the darkness, no matter how enticing it may be, just as Yelena said to Bob :)
I do want to thank all of you if you actually read this whole thing and for engaging with my post! It really means the world to me and makes me feel less alone because I have all of you to chat with on here <3
Here is also a list of my favorite shows and movies because all of these shows and movies mean so much to me but I can’t talk about them all :)
