what *do* you do when you're driving and there's a missile alert
First, you stop your car. Then it depends on circumstances:
If there's an available shelter nearby you have access to - run to it.
If there is no available shelter within the safe timeframe (15-90 seconds, depending on your geographic location), get out of the car, lie flat on your stomach on the road, and cover your head with your hands.
If neither option is available, stay in your car for 10 minutes. (Personally I'd move to the back seat, lie down on my stomach and cover my head ... It's safer to be below the window line.)
The main danger with rockets isn't a direct hit - it's shrapnel and shock waves. Shock waves go after sponge-y organs (like lungs and eardrums) and don't usually go downwards. Shrapnel can be deadly if it hits you directly, but if it hits you on its way down due to gravity, it's pretty harmless. Lying down on your stomach reduces the chance of getting caught in the shock waves and shrapnel. Hands on your head, well - that's safer for your brain, eyes and ears, all in all. Better injure your arms than your head.
