Spirit decides to pregame with Vanya, leaving the two men who've never met before to arrive separately and solo. The girls get to the restaurant early and tipsy - dolled up and, quite frankly, beautiful. Vanya catches a few pairs of eyes.

Vanya helps Spirit order a wine bottle for the table - or, at least, the people at the table drinking. If she's upset about seeing Deco again, she's being a remarkable sport. Still, Spirit feels compelled to fill the air with idle and anxious chatter.

"I did own the place, once." Yeah, right. She should have, but — yeah right. Spirit didn't have a bank account or line of credit before Deco. (She doesn't know what to do with these things without him.) Even if her name was never on any deed or lease, she helped with bills — you know, enough.

She is twenty-eight.

"I really, genuinely, truly just don't understand what is wrong with you."

He is engaged to someone else.

"— why you would do this."

They are in her bed, in the apartment she shares with Harris, who is, like, thirty-six, or something.

Why does he always have to leave?

She trails off crying, know that he hates it, knows she likes doing something that makes him feel something.

PARENTS WHAT PARENTS? spirit does tell deco she comes from a lot of complicated foster homes and has made a lot of complicated connections with "siblings" she met in that environment. she does not go into details about harris, but deco is familiar with juni/lila/burns. they do not have powers.

deco's parents will never know spirit exists.

WORK. deco thinks that spirit sells weed to college kids — nothing more.

spirit has no idea what deco does. she is a little scared by it, intimidated by it. she likes that.
