Orphanage AU where Janus and the Lights meet one another due to similar circumstances after being there for awhile. It was a coincidence, really- but Janus couldn't have asked for better people to share his own thoughts with. Janus began to see them as his brothers the more the years pressed on. They were an efficient team and no other children could highlight his talents or connect with his personality quite like them. He felt such a deep emotional bond with them he couldn't imagine any other family besides them.

Even though he sensed that they didn't reciprocate any of the feelings he had for them. He wasn't a brother to them. Janus knew his presence was only tolerated. They kept him around and included him only because the adults praised all of them for their exceptional traits that were undoubtedly going to help people when they were older, especially Janus himself. They were odd children who somehow ended up at an ordinary orphanage and seemed to form their own little organization at extremely young ages with how they performed in their day to day lives.

The adults would undoubtedly raise eyebrows if they expressed their disinterest in Janus openly by refusing to associate with him after all the years they spent showing how easily they got along. Janus also sensed he was the exception to how the Lights felt about one another. They loved each other dearly and they were undoubtedly family to each other. But Janus understood that he wasn't included in those sentiments. Even if they never said anything and treated him the same, he could tell.

Still, he ignored it. He loved them, he loved them so much. No one else would get him or would be on his level like they could. Janus couldn't let go of that bond he wouldn't get from anyone else.

They all grow up. They're adults now. Some unfortunate circumstances end in the Lights being murdered by an unknown individual that had been targeting them for years. Janus receives the news, he's beyond devastated.

Janus decides to look into the situation and finds out the others were studying this person out of pure interest for awhile and they volunteered him if they ever got bored enough. He finds their files and reads through them. Janus read them, the more he saw their cold, logical way they spoke about him. Having the truth being slapped in his face right in the middle of his mourning of his only family he knew was just salt in the very fresh wound.

Janus could only gradually freeze the more he scrolled through the documents with sad, empty eyes.

His co-worker, who was peering from over his shoulder at the screen said rather matter of factly, "The only people in the world who could actually understand you, and they didn't even love you."

Ok! So! More Janus angst! Because I think thats all I send in at this point.

What if Janus has a really hard time telling the truth from a lie. Like he just can't tell, he tries! But he just can't.

And the others 100% use that to their advantage.

"Janus, we know you took an extra cookie. If you aren't going to admit it just go to your room. You can come back out when you apologize."

"Oh Janus! We care about you! How's the other sides doing?"

"We know that you did it. Stop lying. Thats all you do anyway!"

And I mean, if the others said it was true, then it has to be... Right?

I mean, the others definitely wouldn't lie to the literal embodiment of deceit.

But still, Janus can't bear to leave his bed (let alone his room) but he expects at least someone to check on him.

Only one side continually comes to his door.

Logan.

The logical side does get increasingly more concerned as Janus's responses grow sparser.

He doesn't know what to do anymore when Janus's door is completely silent.

Thomas is a kid and so are the Sides. King Creativity is still around but not for long. How will the kid Deceit and the other sides react to such a big change in Thomas's mind when Creativity is split it to two? Deceit is not sure how to take the chaotic side which is Remus, who seems to be stalking him and causing Thomas to get in too much trouble, bring Morality to their door to 'chat' about the uncontrollably creative half. Not that Deceit see's how that's his problem. Meanwhile, Virgil is curious about the light Sides, especially the new Prince that looks like he escaped from a Disney film. Maybe this could be his chance to talk to a real Prince; even if he is just a kid like Virgil.

King Creativity is back. Which means Janus is alone, not that he's sad or anything. No he's happy for Remus. He's happy the King is back. At least if he keeps telling himself that until he himself believes those words he will be. So what if the Kings return meant Remus was gone. He was Deceit. He was a Dark side. He was fine with being alone.

“Why is there a red mark around his eyes? It makes his eyes look red and puffy. Wait, does he cry himself to sleep at night on the daily? He looks like someone who cries themselves to sleep on the daily.”

I wanted to say that it was probably snake autonomy, but then I remembered Virgil leaving.

And Deceit just wanting to be listened too.

And how he doesn’t feel like he’s doing his job.
