Growing up in Alabama, I often heard the phrase “lesser of two evils” when it came to politics, particularly presidential elections. One week from now, Alabamians will vote for a senate seat, but the choice is very clear between the two candidates:
Moore has been twice-removed from office for illegal actions that violate the civil rights of Americans. He seems unhinged in his recent public appearances. And most troubling, he has been accused of sexual harassment and assault of teenagers when he was an attorney in his 30s (he got banned from the mall, y’all).
In contrast, Doug Jones has spent a lifetime in public service. He prosecuted KKK members who bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church and killed four little girls. He prosecuted the (Atlanta) Olympic Park bomber. He fought Monsanto in court in an environmental case in Anniston. He speaks for people who might not otherwise have a voice. He seems like a good man.
So next week, I don’t wanna see any of the “they’re all the same” sentiments in regard to these candidates. Their differences are stark. And while we might not call one evil and one good, we should acknowledge that they are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
There are often calls to move away from “politics” and to vote for the better person, regardless of party. Here’s your chance, Alabama. Vote for Doug Jones next Tuesday.
