#WomenInHorror: DEAREST SISTER / NONG HAK (2016) directed by Mattie Do (@mangosodium) — Nok, a village girl travels to the Lao capital to care for her cousin, Ana, who is slowly going blind. As she grows close to Ana, Nok discovers a secret — Ana sees figures in the blur of the world, figure who whisper secrets that could be very profitable to Nok. This is a beautifully made film, focusing on questions of trust and manipulation, on the obligations of family and the power of money. The film builds a tension from the start with Nok arriving alone in a place where she doesn’t know where she fits in. The tension continues as she attempts to navigate the uncomfortable space between being a family member and a being a kind of servant. Although she has sympathy for Ana she can’t help but can’t help being lured by the availability of abundance she hadn’t had access to before. The relationship between these two women is wonderfully complex. But the layers don’t stop there, with the husband and servants having interesting roles to play, as well.
