Pairing: Firefighter!Dean Winchester x Reporter!reader
Series Summary: You are just a bright spark at Sam's graduation party Dean never meant to touch. Over the years, you drift in and out of his life like smoke: always enough to sting, but never enough to hold. Some people leave footprints, but you leave burn marks instead. By the time Dean sees the flames, the damage is already done, however, and no matter how many fires he runs into, yours is still the one burning under his skin.
A/N: A nostalgic playlist for Dean's version of this story aka songs Dean denies playing in Baby if he's ever asked about it. It's meant to be a mixtape reader would've made for him (including those track list notes and doodles lol). A reader's version for this series will be available soon as well đ

The door behind you crashes open, a loud crack of plaster emanating as it slams against the wall, and an imposing flannel and denim-clad figure fills the entrance. You hadnât expected to see him here but arenât surprised by the intrusion. The rush of air that follows carries his unique cologne of leather, motor oil, and spicy aftershave, and you scold yourself for the deep inhale to momentarily savor its familiar comfort.
âDonât do it.â His chest heaves with the effort of speaking as if heâs run a marathon.
The gravelly rasp sends your pulse skittering, âWinchester,â but you keep your tone deadpan, suspiciously eyeing his reflection in the mirror in front of you. âYou werenât invited. What are you doing here?â
His almost imperceptible glance to your left tells you all you need to know, and you sigh in exasperation. An amalgam of emotions swirls in the ardent depths of the viridian eyes that again find yours in the mirrorâs reflection. Afraid to analyze why your lungs seize as if the entire room has become an airless void, your relief is palpable when he doesnât give you a chance to.Â
âHe wonât make you happy.â
You inhale sharply, taking a moment to try and calm the fury that overtakes your turmoil as you turn to face him. âI havenât seen you in over a year. You have no idea who or what makes me happy.â
âThatâs not true.â His tone is sure, but no smug smirk backs it up, only a look of dejection.
Tension thickens in the air like the barometric pressure of an oncoming hurricane, and Donna decides to make her escape. Placing a kiss on your cheek, she rubs a hand down your arm, whispering, âGive him a chance to say what he needs to, yeah?â
âYou and I will talk later,â you huff, but return the soft smile she gives you before walking toward Dean. She pats him on the chest, and he nods, giving her a brief smile as he steps further into the room to let her pass.Â
His eyes rake over you, top to bottom and back up. âYouâre stunning.â
He says it with such appreciative awe that your casing cracks a tiny bit as you snap, âWhy are you here?â
âMissed ya.âÂ
Ah, thereâs that cocky grin that has a way of either firing you up or infuriating youâcontingent on the circumstances, of course. Scowling at him, you wave a hand down your body. âKind of busy right now.â
âYeah, âbout that,â he scoffs, âyouâre making a mistake. He doesnât know you like I do. He-â
Unable to stop yourself, you sneer, âAs I said, you know nothing.âÂ
If you give him an inch, he will take that mile and then some. You refuse to let him see that youâve been having doubts, that youâd been caught up in a rip current barely keeping your head above water, and mere minutes before he came bursting in, youâd been talking to Donna about calling the entire thing off.
Ignoring your interruption, he smirks, âI know that under that silky little number,â pointing a finger, âyouâre wearing your favorite Chippewas, the black ones. I know thereâs a garter on your left thigh, but on your right is your PPK-L in that sexy little holster I bought you.âÂ
Damn him!
He takes a step closer. âDoes he know what you used to do? Have you told him what really goes bump in the night?â He nods at the press of your lips, accurately surmising that you havenât. âSo youâre starting this new life with a lie.â
âItâs not a l-â
âAn omission of facts?â he supplies, brow arched in arrogance.
âI left for a reason. It hasnât changed.â He paces like a jungle cat eyeing its prey. Apparently, he has something to get off his chest and isnât going anywhere until he does. âSay what you came to say, then leave.â
âIt has.â
âWhat?â
âYour reasonâfor leavingâoh, itâs changed.â Placing a hand over his heart, he states, âEverything fell apart after you left. I tried. I tried to let you go. I knew youâd be better off, happier without me, so I tried to forget about you and move on. Throwing myself into hunt after hunt, drowning in bottle after bottle of cheap booze âŚnothing worked. Youâre everywhere.â The longing in his eyes belies the fierceness of his tone. âYour voice is a constant whisper in my ear. The taste of you lingers on my tongue like good whiskey. My dreams âŚyou- youâre always there. Itâs like weâre rigged up to an IV of dream root. Even when Iâm awake, you haunt me. You're a ghost that I canât dispel,â throwing his hands up, he grunts, âand Iâm done trying to.â
Swallowing thickly, you stare at him, jaw slack, lips shaped around a heavy exhale. You know he loves you. Understand why he never voiced his deepest emotions or let you get too close. But maybe, now âŚ
âYou say I donât know you, but I do. I always have. And Iâm sorry for not giving you what you needed. Iâm sorry for hurting you. I came here,â doubt creeps into his features for the first time since muscling into the room, âto beg you for a second chance.â
Your pulse beats like a hummingbird's wings as you mutter in disbelief, âItâll never stop.â
âWhat?â The word weighs heavy with defeat in the space between you.
âIâll never stop falling in love with you.â
Smile radiant, his voice a sirenâs song, he extends a hand. âRun away with me.â
