FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, DEAD TEDDY
DEAD TEDDY
I use soft colors and children in my work to make my subject matter appealing and innocent, while revealing a visual memory of lost childhood. The teddy bear in my painting is used as a metaphor for false security. The children in the paintings are universal and represent the disappointment I felt when my teddy bear was not able to keep me safe and secure.
Decorative patterns are a reference to the house I grew up in. The patterns are comforting and evoke feelings of nostalgia, recalling bitter sweet memories of my childhood.
The process in creating these paintings is methodic and systematic, consisting of hand cut stencils and spray paint. Using this technique I feel devoid of violence or disruption, a sense of peacefulness and control. I am influenced by stenciled street art and the genre of Lowbrow art.
