beyond. just beyond.
Hello! I was wondering if you know how to write dialogue correctly. I showed my work to a fellow writer and they suggested that I don't have to split my dialogue tags every time to indicate who’s talking. Like, when two characters are talking to each other, I don't have to do paragraph breaks every time. (Sorry if that’s confusing.) Thank you for reading!
hi!!! ofc :)
there's not "correct" way to write dialogue. it's tricky. sometimes your characters are having a fast paced conversation, and you need less dialogue tags, and sometimes they're lounging and you have the freedom to really dig deep into what they're doing while talking.
dialogue tags are tricky too! they can be too much of a good thing.
if you have a conversation between only two people, then typically you should only need three dialogue tags. but if you have more than two, you'll need more to specify who's talking.
If you take this piece of dialogue:
"I love cake!" Lana said, smiling.
"Oh my god, me too!" Rania said too.
"Really?" Lana said. "What's you're favorite flavor?" She asked.
"Vanilla. What about you?" Rania said back.
it sounds almost childish and blocky, like something you would find in a children's book. But we can tweak it:
"I love cake," Lana said, a dreamy look in her eyes.
"Oh my god, me too!" Rania exclaimed.
"Really? What's your favorite flavor?"
"Vanilla. What about you?"
Now, it sounds more fluid and less blocky. (sorry my explanations lwk suck).
I hope this helps! I kind of feel like i missed the point here because my last draft got deleted so lmk if you have any follow up questions!
