i've never heard of dead beats and im very curious because of your little mall post; what's that rpg like?
Dead Beats is a Horror Brawling RPG wherein you are loser in the late 90s. You are a Dead Beat that has a connection to the realms of Heaven and Hell, but that strong connection also means your mundane life sucks. Your character literally starts the game with stuff like crappy living conditions and a mostly empty refrigerator.
The meat and potatoes of the game is combat, and god is it fun. Drawing cards to get extra actions, and gambling on dodging attacks is very enjoyable for both players and the GM.
Each player has a poker deck that they draw cards from. Their character abilities can allow them to redraw cards, mark cards to know what's coming up, or even add/remove cards from their deck. However, it is rare for you to be able to shuffle, and you will inevitably hit the low cards. It really hits on the idea that your life sucks and luck is temporary.
It's a little awkward for first-time players, but I've only seen people reslly need one game to understand how to kick some serious ass in subsequent ones.
This evening I ran a christmas-themed game where an angel was running experiments on christmas eve shoppers. Hence, the need for violence. (They subdued the children rather than hospitalising them, but the mall santa did not get so lucky.)
