Howdy! I was tagged for wip wednesday last week by @twosides--samecoin. (Thank you! ā¤ļø)
āYou need caps? What for?ā
Barbara leveled a look at him. āFor⦠life? Room and board. Food. Clothesā¦ā
She was looking at him like he was ridiculous for asking but he knew what Deidre charged for rooms and he knew that she almost exclusively ate what she could get for free at the tavern and heād seen every bit of clothing she owned. She hadnāt even been willing to spend caps on a coat in the dead of winter. There was something else, something sitting behind the shade in her eyes that he caught when she was withholding something from someone. He rarely saw it turned on him. He didnāt like seeing it now.
āAnd?ā he pressed.
āAnd?ā she countered.
I'm tagging @hpysprkl and @omkdear to participate if they would like!

Excuse me, Deacon "we were trying for kids" when he found out his wife was a synth, together with Sole Survivor and child synth!Shaun? Deacon finally getting to be the dad he always wanted to be?? Together with someone who sees him as who he wants to be but maybe doesnt have the courage to be yet? Forced to be honest with an innocent child who doesnt see him as a pathological liar because he doesnt want to corrupt him and wants him to live a good life, having a healthy and trusting relationship with the people around him and even *whispers* his father figure?
@noraleedoes posted a #MyDeacon questionnaire so of COURSE I had to do one because, as we know, I have a very very specific Deacon (technically I have two - because of the nature of the current one, there had to also be a previous one, but I'm just doing the current. Hm, maybe a second one for Vicar later? We'll see).
Some of these were REALLY tough to answer, and a lot of fun to think about. It took me way too long to get this finished and you can very clearly see the ones where I was like 'I'm tired and I just wanna post this already' lol.
Anyway, my Deacon.
Pre-Fieldwork Checklist
0. Is he _______? Check all that apply. Supply additional notes as desired.
[ ] A synth?
[ ] A ghoul?
[ ] An alien or other cryptid?
[ ] A time traveler?
[ ] From before the war?
[X] From a vault?
The one, the only Lone Wanderer of Vault 101!
[ ] From the West Coast or New Vegas?
He isn't, but his predecessor is...
[X] From the Capital Wasteland?
[ ] Married?
[ ] A widower?
[ ] A father?
[X] A former raider/gang member?
A young, bitter, angry Alex, shortly after faking his death in the Capital and a miserable stint in the Pitt, counted himself among the UP Deathclaws for a time. And he was sort of a Tunnel Snake, too. Still has the jacket...for the time being.
[ ] A former teacher?
No, but he was the vault chaplain in 101.
[X] Recovering/recovered from chem addiction?
After he left the vault, chems became a way of life for him for a long time. Med-X was his drug of choice, but on a bad day he'd take whatever he could get his hands on. Had a decent chem trade going on in Megaton once he got some lab equipment set up in his house; Leo Stahl was a regular customer. By the time he found his way to the Commonwealth, he'd stopped caring enough to keep up his old habit of periodically detoxing. The UP Deathclaws offered him all the chems and company he wanted, and that was good enough for him at that point. He quit chems when he joined the Railroad, and sticks to booze, caffeine, and nicotine now.
[ ] Agamemnon?
[ ] John D.?
[ ] The/a founder of the Railroad?
[ ] The current and/or secret leader of the Railroad?
Casual Observation
1. How old is he? How old does he look?
29 during MBWATD (start of FO4). He looks late 30's, maybe 40 at that point.
2. How tall is he? What's his default posture like?
6'2" and he's learned to hate it. He stood out enough in the vault, but in the wasteland it's even harder to blend in like that. He leans and slouches a LOT, and is always grateful for those rare covers where his height isn't a disadvantage.
3. What's his body type/build like? Is he as strong/agile as he looks? Less so? More?
Lean and muscular. Not skinny by any means, but he's never been especially bulky. Strong arms and shoulders from lugging that rifle around all the time.
4. Is he naturally bald, balding, or would he have a full head of hair if not for removing it? What is his natural hair color? Does he have body hair?
He would have a full, thick head of red hair if he let it grow. And while yes, it is a distinctive color, and that's his answer if anyone asks why he shaves it, that's not the real reason he does. He has what I would consider to be a fairly average amount of body hair, and doesn't usually shave or trim that.
5. How often does he wear that pompadour wig? Does he have other wigs?
He wears it when he needs to, but would rather just go bald - wigs are annoying and kinda itchy and require maintenance. He has other wigs, but he can only drag around so many at a time, especially if he wants to keep them in usable condition, so he usually just has one, maybe two available at any given time. Anything more specific needs to be retrieved from storage.
6. Does he have any scars? Freckles or other marks? Any tattoos or piercings?
He had tattoos and piercings, but he removed all the metal in his face (and *cough* elsewhere) and had his tattoos lasered when he joined the Railroad. He cried when it was time to start on the Tunnel Snake. He gets a bit freckly when he spends more time in the sun, but he's not as fair-skinned as some redheads. He has a variety of scars, which is pretty normal in the wasteland - lord knows he's been shot, stabbed, burned, or blown up enough times - but I've never particularly thought about what or where.
7. What kind of clothing does he wear when he's not working/when he's at rest?
If he's really and truly alone and someplace he feels safe, a pair of sweatpants or boxers and maybe a t-shirt. If there are people around, he never really feels like he's 'off duty', and is always dressed and ready for action.
8. What are his hands like? Soft, calloused? Are his nails rough, neat, bitten?
His hands are a bit rough/callused. He takes care of them as best he can, always keeps his nails trimmed and as clean as possible. Doesn't bite them anymore, but he used to when he was young. Sometimes has ink stains around his cuticles.
9. What does he smell like? What are his hygiene habits like?
Mostly smells of cigarettes, his favorite pine tar soap, and sweat. I have a lot of thoughts on personal hygeine products in the wasteland (including deodorant), and I'll make a post on that some time. He stays as clean as humanly possible when he's on the road (old vault habits die hard, and he doesn't like being dirty), and gets a little cranky when he can't at least wash thoroughly (but preferably shower).
10. When (if ever) does he take his sunglasses off? Why does he wear them?
He has photophobia. Whether it's genetic, or just a result of spending 19 years underground in shitty fluorescent lighting, he doesn't know - but the sun is a deadly laser that stabs him in the eyeballs every time he steps outside, so he's worn sunglasses since he left the vault. Later on they gave him the added advantage of hiding his big pretty blue eyes. By this point in his life, the world feels and looks wrong to him without them. He takes them off when he's alone indoors.
Further Investigation
11. Who is he, in his mind? How does he define himself? What name(s) feels right, if any?
There's a very clear divide between Alex and Deacon in his head. Alex is the person he was, not who he is anymore, and Deacon...well, Deacon is a title, tool, a weapon, a means to an end. A collection of carefully curated traits and skills and self-deprecating humor that he's duct taped together to keep himself upright. Certainly not a person. His face is no longer his own - even his voice is a constant performance. Alex gave up the right to be a person a long time ago; Deacon has given up on the idea that he can ever earn that back. So instead, he fights for the personhood of people who can't fight for themselves. It's not until he meets the Sole Survivor that he realizes he didn't bury Alex quite as deep as he thought he did, and that maybe the man he used to be isn't as dead as Deacon hoped he was (I'm so normal about it).
12. Who does he trust, if anyone? With some things or wholeheartedly? Why?
Almost no one. Ironically, the one person he trusts the most for a very long time - his predecessor, Vicar - is probably the one he should trust the least.
He's very conflicted about Jules for a while, especially when she's fresh out of the vault - mainly because he develops such an immediate, intense fascination with her, and it (rightly) scares the absolute shit out of him. He knows his objectivity is...shaky at best for a while, and he can't rely on his own judgement where she's concerned. By the time she finally joins the Railroad, though, he's spent so long watching her that she's become the one person he really fully trusts (hello, words, I'm actions and I'm speaking awfully loud). He knows she'll fight and kill and, if necessary, die for the people she loves, and he can work with that. That's predictable, reliable, and to Deacon, worth more than any misguided brand of altruism.
13. What made him choose Deacon as a codename - or is it not a codename at all?
He didn't choose it - it was handed down to him by the previous Deacon - but he finds it endlessly amusing given his former occupation in the vault and, later on, the fact that their headquarters is under an old church. If he were the kind of man who believed in that sort of thing, he might even call it destiny.
14. What is going on in his head? This could be just a notable train of thought or it could be a full exploration of what makes him tick, up to you!
Everything. He has ADHD (not that he knows that) and PTSD and anxiety and gets pretty paranoid at times. He is never not overthinking EVERYTHING and he. is. tired.
15. When did he become involved with the Railroad? Why?
He was first introduced to the Railroad in Rivet City in 2278, and didn't think too much of them back then. He helped Harkness out because it seemed like the right thing to do (or maybe just because he was bored and high), sent Zimmer packing, and promptly fucked off back to Megaton. It wasn't until a few years later that he got dropped back in at the deep end and became who he is today.
16. When might he retire or step away from the Railroad, if ever? What might motivate or influence that decision?
He'll retire eventually, but he continues with the Railroad for a while after the Institute is destroyed. By that point, he's put a lot of work into healing and spent quite some time grappling with the idea that he might deserve to be a person again, but it's the birth of his daughter that finally pushes him to step down. He's fought long and hard to make the world a safer place, both here and in the Capital, and he finally feels he's earned the right to live his own life for a change.
17. Where is he from? What was his early home life like? How does he remember it?
Growing up in Vault 101 sucked. He had to watch everything he said and did, because someone was always watching him. The emphasis was always on who he was to the vault, what he could be for other people, and he felt suffocated by that sense of responsibility for as long as he could remember.
His relationship with his father was complicated - James was a loving dad, but he was always busy and often distant. He had a hard time letting go of his wife's memory, and seemed to Alex to always be distracted by the past rather than living in the present. By the time James left the vault, he and Alex barely spoke anymore.
18. Where is the farthest from the Commonwealth that he's been? Why did he go there?
Point Lookout, MD is probably technically the farthest he's been from the Commonwealth (I'm too lazy to look up the exact distance; I'm just eyeballing it on a map). He'd say he went there to help someone, but he'd be lying. He was mostly in it for the money, and his own curiosity.
19. Why does he favor the tactics/weapons that he does? Is he proficient with others?
He's learned to kill in a lot of creative ways since he left the vault, but he favors distance and stealth because he'd rather not have to watch someone die up close unless he can help it; he's done too much killing as it is.
20. Why/when did he first take interest in the Sole Survivor? What were his intentions?
I've written about how exactly she ended up on his radar, so you can read about that if you want to, but it was the similarities between their stories that really drew him to Jules - a woman who didn't belong to this place, tossed out into an unforgiving wasteland she never thought she'd live to see, let alone have to actually live in. Searching for the only family she had left, fighting to survive, struggling to adapt.
It's the deeper struggle that he relates to the most, though. After certain events (which we haven't hit yet in the fic), she finds herself searching for a reason to keep going, to get out of bed every day, to keep putting one foot in front of another, and that's what keeps him haunting her steps on the long road that eventually leads her to the Railroad.
21. How did he get in the habit of lying? Does he remember? Could he stop?
Growing up in an authoritarian wet dream like 101 meant you learned to lie early and often. Speaking your mind was strongly discouraged, and was likely to land you in a lot of hot water. As a queer teenager grappling with his sexuality in a society where 'procreation is your civic duty', those lies became even more essential. And when his entire world fell apart and he was forced to learn to navigate an unforgiving wasteland where everything about him screamed 'easy target' to every asshole he met, lying was a matter of basic survival.
He lies with every muscle and every movement. It comes as naturally as breathing, and when he admits to Jules that he 'can't tell the truth,' it's because he never really learned how; it's going to take him a while to figure it out.
22. How well can he actually lie or maintain a facade? Does he have any particular tells or nervous fidgets? If so, is he aware of them?
He's very good at lying, and doesn't really have any specific tells; never had many to begin with, but Vicar did a good job of beating the rest out of him. Still, somehow, his pet vaultie can read him like a book.
Emergency Improv
23. Share a lie that he uses often, that he is particularly proud of, or that he's amused by. What sets it apart in his mind?
His favorite 'lies' are the ones that aren't really lies. Little crumbs of his real life that no one would ever believe no matter how sincerely he delivers them. "I grew up in a vault; I was a morale officer." Entirely true, and very much how he looks at his time as vault chaplain. "I hate playgrounds." Bonkers. Who hates playgrounds? Well, a man who had to dodge frag mines and sniper fire through an abandoned playground just to make a few caps might. It's a little thrill, dangling outright truth under someone's nose and them being none the wiser.
He's been telling those lies long enough that he hasn't stopped to consider he might one day meet someone who'd hear them (really hear them), file them away, and slowly arrange them into a picture he didn't think anyone was capable of putting together anymore.
24. Share a truth that he usually keeps to himself. Has he/will he share it with any one/few person/people in particular? Why?
That's he's not the first agent to call himself Deacon. That he was the Lone fucking Wanderer, once upon a time. That there was a time he believed in what the Brotherhood stood for, when the rank of Knight meant something to him, when a better man led them and the wolves weren't yet snarling at his heels. Vicar knows most of those; Jules will figure them out.
25. Free Space. Fun(?) fact or ramble of your choosing.
Spoke fluent French as a kid, but started to lose that as he spent less and less time around his dad. His vocabulary is pretty terrible now but his accent is good. He can read it better than he can speak it.
Refuses to call Jules by a name until he has a codename to call her by. Until then it's the vaultie, One-Eleven, boss, the chief, the general, etc.
For the ask game, I feel like I know BD Deacon really well already, but I know pretty much nothing about Or Else Deacon yet, so can I get a 0, 11, 14, and 20 for him pretty please? ā¤ļø
Hello!
0 - (the checkboxes)
I'll be real with you, I haven't completely hammered out his backstory just yet š but! I can tell you he is for sure a widower and he is for sure a human and he is for sure from the Commonwealth.
11 - Who is he in his mind? How does he define himself? What name feels right?
At this point in his life, he is outwardly whoever he needs to be in the moment. When he is with Railroad agents, he is Deacon: the goofball, flies by the seat of his pants, probably has some sort of an attention disorder weirdo who pops in and out on a whim and rarely works with others. Other than that, he's playing it all by ear. Even with what's going on with Nora he is in part just being who he thinks she needs him to be... or at least that's what he's telling himself.
14 - What is going on in his head?
His ultimate goal is to bring down the Institute and free all the synths. His Barbara didn't remember being a synth but she had a lot of the markers of someone with CPTSD and after her death and after he joined the Railroad, he latched onto the idea that she had been in some way abused in the Institute, so this is very much his core directive. Everything else is a stream of observation mixed with intuition mixed with tricky schemes to get him to where he wants to be. Everything else he happens to do or see or participate in is just 𤷠happenstance.
20 - Why/When did he first take an interest in the sosu? What were his intentions?
Like with BD Deacon he took an interest in the vault early and was promptly made aware when it opened. He went to investigate immediately, going through the vault's files and tailing Nora for a little while. Unlike BD Deacon, he was not immediately enamoured with her, but he did think she was worth keeping tabs on and he did so through the use of spies and occasionally by watching her himself. His theory for a long time was that she was an Institute plant, sent to implement experimental conditions on the people of the Commonwealth as the General of the Minutemen. The bigger the organization gets the more time he spends watching her personally, convinced that his theory is correct. Through this he learns more about who she is and about what she does when she thinks she's alone š and he becomes less and less convinced that she has anything to do with the Institute at all. From what he's observed, she doesn't appear to have a deceptive bone in her body. Really, by about six or seven months in, he's pretty sure she isn't the lead he'd been hoping she was but he still keeps her in the rotation, just in case he's wrong. No other reason.
Thank you for the ask! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
Here is the prompt list, if anyone is curious to see it!
<Hereās my go!> (Also I canāt remember who started the ādead manāsā when referring to deacon before his life went to shit but its wonderful and I hope you donāt mind that Iāve borrowed it! I believe it mightve been @lee-cu , Do let me know if itās trouble!)
Pre-Fieldwork Checklist
0. Is he _______? Check all that apply. Supply additional notes as desired.
[ ] A synth?
[ ] A ghoul?
[ ] An alien or other cryptid?
[ ] A time traveler?
[ ] From before the war?
[ ] From a vault?
[x] From the West Coast or New Vegas?
He grew up on Lake Mead! Like literally on it, his childhood hope is a shack on stilts.
[ ] From the Capital Wasteland?
[x] Married?
Deacon is not married but a dead man is and will always consider himself as such.
[x] A widower?
Barbara is very very real.
[x] A father?
There was a baby between him and Barbara, poor thing passed 3 months before Barbara was supposed to give birth. He also has another little girl. He got drunk and there was tourist who had Barbaraās face. Different skin tone but still. He gave her up to a good family but if a dead man recovers, heās got their word he can have her back.
[x] A former raider/gang member?
UP Deathclaws werenāt real, the L&L raider gang was very real though.
[ ] A former teacher?
[x] Recovering/recovered from chem addiction?
He used to be addicted to Med-X and Buffout. Got clean after joining up with the Railroad. Now he just has massive sweet tooth and drink a lot of coffee.
[ ] Agamemnon?
[x] John D.?
He was almost 100% honest with the SoSu, except about the UP Deathclaws and some timeline stuff. He joined the Railroad after he lynched that kid and Agamemnon helped him get clean. He took on the name John D. and became the most valuable runner to the organization and was seen as Agamemnonās ear.
[ ] The/a founder of the Railroad?
[ ] The current and/or secret leader of the Railroad?
1.How old is he? How old does he look?
As of 2287 he is 43 years old. Born on December 25th 2244
2. How tall is he? What's his default posture like?
He is 6ā. Heās from a mountainous region and everyone around where he grew up was tall with longer limbs. Most people in the commonwealth just think he lived near the mountains so it doesnāt blow his cover often. Even still, some people are just taller in the commonwealth. His posture changes based on what persona heās taking on. Deacon slouches/leans around basically everyone but alone its actually pretty straight. Except for the leaning, thats a habit heās genuinely picked up.
3. What's his body type/build like? Is he as strong/agile as he looks? Less so? More?
His body type is very androgynous with a bit of chest and slimmer hips but nothing too noticeable if you arenāt looking. Heās more strong than he looks, incredibly agile as well . Thats just normal wasteland bulk though, you got have a certain amount of strength or be really good with a gun. Most of its left over from a dead man though.
4. Is he naturally bald, balding, or would he have a full head of hair if not for removing it? What is his natural hair color? Does he have body hair?
If he didnāt shave his head, heād have a full and thick head of hair. Heās a redhead and even prewar redheads stood out so he shaves. All of the hair on his body is also red just a bit lighter, more muted. He has some body hair but nothing of note. As for pubic hair, he thinks being completely clean shaven is weird so its there but well maintained.
5. How often does he wear that pompadour wig? Does he have other wigs?
He has other wigs absolutely! His pompadour is his favorite just because he can change that one pretty easily but another one of note is a platinum blonde wig for a persona of his called Violet , a lounge singer from Atlantic City.
6. Does he have any scars? Freckles or other marks? Any tattoos or piercings?
Naturally has freckles but he takes them away every face change. When they start popping up again he knows its time for another one. They are full bodied and used to kind of swirl on his butt and thighs. A dead man use to have a sleeve of tattoos and a bunch of face piercings but Deacon only has his ears pierced. Heāll get a piercing for a persona/op but nothing permanent.
7. What kind of clothing does he wear when he's not working/when he's at rest?
Flannels, Pajamas, graphic tees. Just a hodgepodge of comfy clothes from his costume trunk really.
8. What are his hands like? Soft, calloused? Are his nails rough, neat, bitten?
Calloused, theyāre a sniper after all! His nails are kept clean though, he cant abide being dirty.
He just really doesnāt like it.
9. What does he smell like? What are his hygiene habits like?
Very faintly of cigarette smoke and incense cause of the church but youād have to be practically on top of them to smell that. He washes whenever he can and he keeps a bowl, some water, a rag and some soap on him whenever traveling with the SoSu.
10. When (if ever) does he take his sunglasses off? Why does he wear them?
When he is alone or when heās sleeping. And eventually, after his final affinity with the SoSu. He wears them cause his eyes arenāt his own, his eyes are a dead manās. His eyes were Barbaraās favorite part of him besides his hair. He also wears them so no one knows where heās looking. And cause one of his tells is not blinking.
11. Who is he, in his mind? How does he define himself? What name(s) feels right, if any?
Deacon is another persona, a vessel for good, a mask. Whoever was under this mask died a long time ago but after getting closer to the SoSu, is he really all that dead? No name feels right to him, not without talking to someone first.
12. Who does he trust, if anyone? With some things or wholeheartedly? Why?
The SoSu and himself. Eventually he trusts the SoSu wholeheartedly. Heās been with them through everything, heās slept beside them, he has listened to them share things that ring too close to home for him as well. They are two sides of the same coin. At first it was cause he needed to and it wasnāt a whole lot, after the second affinity talk though? He trusts them, after the third? He trusts them with lifetimes of knowledge nobody, not even him really remembers.
13. What made him choose Deacon as a codename - or is it not a codename at all?
A dead manās last name was Deacon and a Deacon is second to the priest, helps the church run smoothly, he thought it fit and no one is none the wiser.
14. What is going on in his head? This could be just a notable train of thought or it could be a full exploration of what makes him tick, up to you!
He thinks heās cursed, that for the rest of his life he will have to atone for Barbara and the boy he lynched. He visits that boyās mom every couple of years, leaves flowers and a note. He feels fundamentally aimless. All he knows is they he has to help. Help communities heās hurt, help the railroad, help the sole survivor. Just help, thats all heās here for.
15. When did he become involved with the Railroad? Why?
He joined up when Agamemnon was running the joint. After he lynched that boy, Soloman, he ran. Course they couldnāt let him leave without jumping him out, handed his ass to him, truly. But the Railroad was more open in those days and he ran to them, told Agamemnon what heād done and how he was so sorry. Agamemnon brought him in, gave him addictol , a bed and some food though the RR didnāt have a lot at the time. He took the dead manās under his wing.
16. When might he retire or step away from the Railroad, if ever? What might motivate or influence that decision?
Never, even after the institute. Theyāll redirect the railroad to helping other groups in need. People, Synths, Ghouls, Super Mutants will always be in need so Deaconās work is never finished.
17. Where is he from? What was his early home life like? How does he remember it?
He lived on Lake Mead with his mom and grandparents. He remembers it fondly and with a lot of home sickness. His mom and grandmothers loved him but he was lonely as a kid, would talk to himself a lot. He had two friends but he didnāt see them a lot. Then his mom got sick when he was 13 and they shipped off to live with his aunt in the commonwealth but she died so he was alone. Little wonder how he fell in with L&L.
18. Where is the furthest from the Commonwealth that he's been? Why did he go there?
Heās been as far as Baffin Bay up in Canada/Denmark. He went up there for a special synth route.
19. Why does he favor the tactics/weapons that he does? Is he proficient with others?
He hunted as a kid as another way to get food on the table so he prefers long range. Heās also fine with 10mm and surprisingly a flamer. He keeps a knife on him too if he ever needs to get hand to hand. Heās also alright in hand to hand but he does not prefer it.
20. Why/when did he first take interest in the Sole Survivor? What were his intentions?
He accidentally found an institute broadcast because to maintenance workers were sloppy for a second. He overheard that they kidnapped a kid from 111. He couldnāt trace the comm but he stayed hooked on the vault and did some more digging. Found out everything he could before the SoSu woke up and was watching when they did. He figured the Institute would try to take this person and groom them to be the not-so kid anymoreās successor and figured he could sway them to the other side.
21. How did he get in the habit of lying? Does he remember? Could he stop?
He doesnāt remember, and it pathological, even if the dead version of him returns , the lies will still be there. Not as bad of course but you canāt teach an old dog new tricks.
22. How well can he actually lie or maintain a facade? Does he have any particular tells or nervous fidgets? If so, is he aware of them?
Heās can lie remarkably well, he could sell practically anyone on anything. Its very hard to see through any of deaconās bs. He has exactly two tells: He doesnāt blink when heās lying and he wrings his wrist out once. Never very noticeable and heās pretty good at catching himself but some things slip through.
23.Share a lie that he uses often, that he is particularly proud of, or that he's amused by. What sets it apart in his mind?
He likes fucking with people and telling them heās pre-war. It started after he started with SoSu and its so fleshed out he keeps a journal of this persona so he can keep track. It sticks in his brain cause its so absurd. His second favorite is his Atlantic City one, mainly because he actually really likes Atlantic City. He will never admit it but it kinda reminds him of home.
24. Share a truth that he usually keeps to himself. Has he/will he share it with any one/few person/people in particular? Why?
Besides his living daughter, I think another secret is that heās tired and old and in another life heās a farmer with kids running around the yard and his wife reading on the porch and heās mad at himself that he might never get that. An even scarier truth is that if the SoSu wasnāt there with him in this fantasy as well, he probably wouldnāt want it.
25. Free Space. Fun(?) fact or ramble of your choosing.
His/A dead manās real name is Johannes Ryan Deacon. He prefers Jonah though and only his Grandmother may call him Johannes. As a kid his mom called him Joanie-Bird.
Also in my head no matter the SoSu to me, he will always fall in love with them. Even if they betray the railroad or if they find someone else. He will love them.
Anya is live and ready to show you everything. Watch her strip, dance, and perform exclusive shows just for you. Interact in real-time and make your fantasies come true.

I feel like I've got some catching up to do for Or Else Deacon, so pretty please - 2, 6, 10, 19, and 25 for him?
Hello!
For Or Else I Can't Stay Deacon:
2 - Height and default posture
He is around the 6' mark. I hc that people are generally shorter/smaller in the wasteland than they would have been pre war due to a lack of growth hormone in their foods so while this isn't freakishly tall, it's still not all that common.
He defaults to having pretty good posture, but does slouch/lean/have performative bad posture when he needs to. Notably, he does a lot of slouching/leaning around other RR members.
6 - Does he have any scars? Freckles or other marks? Tattoos or piercings?
He has plenty of scars just from being an active RR agent. Some bullet wounds, places where he got knicked by something making a daring escape, nothing too serious. If asked, he is forthcoming with an answer for how he got this scar or another. Never true stories though. Improv practice.
10 - When does he take his sunglasses off? Why does he wear them?
He takes them off to sleep and when he's alone. He wears them to hide his distinctive eyes, to conceal where he's looking, and to hide a pretty damning tell.
19 - Why does he favor the tactics/weapons that he does? Is he proficient with others?
His strongest and most well used tactics are his ability to improv and his skill using a stealthboy completely undetected. Both of these things are intuitive to him and he built the rest of his strategy around it, getting good with short range weapons and basic hand to hand for when shit goes south. He prefers range though, because it's what he learned growing up for hunting purposes. Because of this he keeps a couple syringers stashed around thr Commonwealth and is good at making the ammo for them. They come in handy.
25 - Free Space!!
He doesn't know how to have a conversation with someone that isn't dripping with misdirects and jokes and stupid little bullshit tangents. He almost could at one point but even with Barbara their conversations were half bullshitting. In the years since he lost her he's become less and less capable of saying anything real. If it sounds like he's speaking from the heart, he's either playing a part or doing a bit. Having to work with... someone... who has a hard time reading between the lines becomes š a challenge and inspires him to try and speak more directly where it counts... but not until some damage has been done š¬
Thank you for the ask!
Here is the ask game if anyone is interested in asking more.
I was going through that Deacon ask meme and was thinking to myself that you really have answered so many of these questions already because of how much thought and heart you've put into him in your writing, so, here are some that piqued my interest: 8, 9, 13, & 18! š„
ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø that's so sweet of you to say!
I'm going to assume BD Deacon for these.
8 - what are his hands like?
Rough and calloused from overuse. Dry and cracking from repeated hand washing. Nails are groomed. Yes with his teeth, because that's practical, but no not because he's anxious.
9 - Hygeine and personal smell
He is absolutely meticulous about hygiene. When things are real bad up there he will sometimes use straight Abraxo on his skin. This doesn't mean that he is not ever sweaty and smelly, it does happen at times, but the day does not end for him until he has removed all the scuzz and unwanted hair and put on fresh clothes. Because of this, he mostly smells very Abraxo-y.
13 - What made him choose Deacon as a codename?
He did not choose it for himself. He got stuck with it. š
18 - Where is the furthest from the Commonwealth he's been and why did he go there?
Capital Wasteland setting up a safe pipeline to send rescued synths through. He's traveled in many directions for this, including Quebec and Maine.
