Admittedly... girls sort of frightened him. Its why he lingered so close the Wash's heels, indulged in Wyoming's company. Those two tended to... discourage the presence of females.
So it's not out of rudeness that he has waited so long to get to know Delaware; it was a courtesy, to himself- and to her, to not have to be in such poor company. By that of course he means... he is terrible at carrying a conversation.
It's politeness too then, that keeps him seated across from her when everyone else retires to the cabins. Fingers folded and fidgeting amongst themselves.
A small sound of acknowledgement in the back of his throat invites conversation, if she wished it.
