Okay idk if this is something you'd write but I just got the cutest idea! What about playboy heartbreaker Jimmy Olsen who's really affectionate besties with an AroAce reader đĽš
Like they're strictly platonic but incredibly close and maybe cuddley. They pretend to be partners whenever they aren't interested in someone. I imagine that's how they became friends in the first place lmao like venting about how often they're rejecting people because it's not like Jimmy is gonna get with EVERY girl in metropolis! and reader simply isn't interested at all. Jimmy loves having a girl friend that he knows for sure won't fall for him and reader is relieved to FINALLY have a guy friend who isn't expecting more from her. Neither of them have to walk on eggshells because they know it's not happening. I just think it's adorable like they're perfect opposites đđ
bestest of friends
pairing: platonic!dcu!jimmy olsen x aroace!fem!reader
warning/tags: workplace sexual harassment (not reader), sexual harassment in the form unwanted advances, touchy!jimmy, alcohol consumption
note: this.... got more serious than i intended, i'm so sorry!!
You like your job, you do. Writing for The Daily Planet's International column is a dream come true. You've worked hard for this ever since university.Â
But sometimes, sometimes you get interns.Â
It's not that you hate them, or that you don't want to work with themâit's just that sometimes, sometimes they have a crush on Jimmy Olsen.Â
Like this girl. Vanessa. Well-meaning, sweet little Vanessa who wants to impress you and get into Jimmy's pants while she's at it.Â
âAre you and Jimmy in an open relationship?â She asks, as you pour yet another cup of coffee into your mug.Â
It's a little past midday. Clark is missing even though he told you he wants to write about the aftermath of the Jahanpur invasion that's due yesterday.Â
Safe to say, you are not in a very good mood.Â
So you pause in the middle of the bullpen. And you blink. Twice. Before turning to the bright-eyed girl. âI'm sorry?â
She catches on to your irritation immediately. âI'mâso sorry. It's just, I know you guys are dating but last Friday I saw him at a club dancing with another girl soâI thoughtââ
You turn towards Jimmy, who's talking animatedly with Lois at his desk.Â
âAsk him,â You tell her, a challenging eyebrow raised.Â
Vanessa freezes in her spot. âWâwhat?â
âAsk him, if you want to know so bad.â
âThat's crazyâthat's, that's inappropriateââÂ
You tilt your head, âSo if you think that's an inappropriate question to ask him, why do you think it's appropriate to ask me?â
Her mouth opens, then closes, eyes wide as saucers. âIâuhâIâsorryâI justâsorry!â
She turns, high tailing out of the bullpen to have a cry somewhere, probably.Â
You roll your eyes, absolutely done with the audacity of these interns. Sure, you're nice, you don't pressure them too much, you don't yell, and you try to encourage them as best as you can, but apparently it means you're friends, now.Â
Lois whistles when you settle on your desk across from her, next to Jimmy's. She moves her legs down from the way her ankles were resting on the edge of Jimmy's desk.Â
âThat has got to be a record,â She says, a slow grin on her lips. âTwo weeks in, and you've already made one of them cry.â
âNah,â Jimmy shakes his head. âI think last year it was a week in?â
âShut up,â You grumble, then point a finger at him. âThis is your fault.â
âMe? What did I do?â
âExist, apparently,â Lois muses. âHow the fuck do you do it, Jimmy?â
âDo what exactly?â
Your eyes fall to a group of internsâfrom different divisions, no lessâcongregating at the copier. They're giggling, smiling while looking at Jimmy.Â
You scoff at Jimmy, who's sending them a hesitant smile and a small wave. âI hate you.â
He grins at you, a hand coming down to the top of your head. âAww, don't be like that, you know you're my favorite!â
Lois makes a gagging sound. For one, you agree with her.Â
âEven if I'm not aro-ace, I would sooner kiss Guy Gardner.â
âYou don't mean that,â Lois wrinkles her nose. âTrust me, you don't mean that.â
Jimmy stands behind you then, pushing your head to rest on his stomach. He's got one hand on either one of your cheeks, and then he smushes them together. You look like a goldfish with lip gloss on its lips and murder in its eyes.Â
You try to fix him a glare, but it's hard when you have your cheeks covering half your eyes. âJimââ
He smiles, big and toothy. âSorry, what was that?â
âIâll kill you,â you sayâor, you try to say anyway. Kinda hard when your jaw is rendered immobile.Â
âWhat was that? Youâll buy me a drink at Catâs birthday party tonight?â
Before you can reply, or hit him in the jaw, Loisâ voice cuts whatever fun Jimmy is having with your poor face.Â
âAnd where have you been, Kent?â Her tone is both accusing and knowing. With her mention of the ever-so-elusive reporter, you push Jimmy aside, then swivel your chair to follow Clark Kentâs steps to his desk.
You narrow your eyes. âYeah, Kent, where have you been?â
Clark has the decency to wince both at you and Lois. âI have them, I promise, I just need to e-mail it to you!â
âIf I donât have that file in the next two minutes, I swear to God, Kentââ
âShe will make you cry like new interns,â Jimmy says, nodding solemnly.Â
Clark grins sheepishly. âI brought donuts? Theyâre in the break room?â
You tilt your head in pretend consideration. âFine, ten minutes.âÂ
Then, your eyes catch Jimmyâs. âCinnamon sugar beignets,â he says without prompting. âI got it.â
âWhat would you like?â you ask Lois. âGlazed?â
She smiles gratefully. âAnd a powdered one, please.â
You link your elbow with Jimmyâs making your merry way to the break room. Usually Clark would get a separate small box hidden behind the array of teas and coffees for your little group. Mostly to save some from Steveâs tendency to black out for donuts.Â
Jimmy takes a chocolate filled-one, biting into it before you can tell him to get a plate. You place Loisâ on a small white ceramic before leaning against the communal fridge, biting to your own beignets.Â
âJesus Christ, woman,â Jimmy scolds as you let out a groan. âThis is a professional environment!â
He has a small dab of chocolate filling at the corner of his mouth, and you dab it with a tissue paper without hesitation. âSue me.â
The two of you stand there, in the break room, side by side enjoying the sugary fried dough. Itâs nice to take a breather for a minute. It may be hard to believe, but you donât want to hover over Clark Kent as he makes final edits and adjustments to his article. The irritation of the day slowly melts away as you talk about nothing with your best friend over donuts.Â
But of course, this is Metropolis. Anything nice and peaceful just had to be derailed in one way or another.Â
You hear it first, the voices coming from the adjacent equipment closet. Your hand make contact with Jimmyâs shoulder in an effort to tell him to shut the fuck up.Â
ââSheâs such a witch!â a voice exclaims, followed by a small sniffle. âShe probably just wants to keep Jimmy all to herself. Like some crazy, possessive girlfriend and Ms. Grant says they arenât even dating!â
Jimmy catches your eyes, amusement sparkling in both your faces. Heâs about to say something stupid, judging by the grin on his face, before another voice cuts in, âWell, thatâs obvious. She wonât be such a bitch if sheâs getting laid.â
Both your jaws drop in unison, taken aback by the crudeness and audacity. You know then, itâs Vanessa and some other intern whoâs trying to comfort her.
Your eyes set, lips curled in a way that Jimmy knows youâre going to start a fight.Â
âWait, waitââ he pleads, arm keeping you from moving towards the closed door. âLet me talk to them.â
âOh, because of course theyâll listen to a man over a woman,â you scoff. âTheir internship supervisor, no less.â
The decision is out of both your hands, it turns out, as a moment later, the door opens, with Vanessa and another internâCatâs, you rememberâstepping out of the room.Â
Their body goes rigid as they see you and Jimmy in the break room, cinnamon sugar coating your lips.Â
Vanessa opens her mouth, apologies stammering out. Her friend stands there, frozen in fear. âI amâso sorryâmy friend and Iâwe didnât mean itâwe were just upset and stupid! Weâre so sorry, it wonât happen againââ
Her eyes move over to Jimmy, watching, waiting, if heâd do anything to come to their rescue or at least lessen the blow. But itâs Jimmy. He has expressed his discomfort over this particular group of interns who keep flirting with him during assignments. He told you once that Vanessa, during her photojournalism rotation, crashed Jimmy and his assigned internâs assignment at City Hall.
âNo, it wonât,â you agree. âMeet me and Human Resources at Meeting Room A in twenty minutes. Both of you.â
They leave the break room without wasting another second.Â
You turn to Jimmy, âSee, if you had kept a record of their inappropriate behaviors, I wouldnât look like such a bitch now, would I?â
âI just didnât think itâs worth getting them in trouble for.â
âYou can set your own boundaries, you know?â
âI tried, they didnât listen,â he sighs, tiredly, head falling onto your shoulder.Â
Your hand reaches to his hair, giving him a mocking pout. âAww, donât worry, Iâll make it go away for you, baby.â
âShut up,â he groans to your blouse. Then adds, âThank you.â
Jimmy coaxing you to leave your things at his apartment means that youâre playing guard dog tonight.Â
Whenever you both go to a club or a bar, thereâs an automatic role of taking care of each other. Heâll drive guysâand girlsâaway from you, and youâd do the same. At the end of the night, heâll drive you home.Â
He told you he doesnât go home with girls if he goes out with his friends. Despite you telling him that you donât care, thatâs a boundary he never crossed.Â
In fact, thatâs how you met him.Â
You just moved to Metropolis from Central City, your then-roommates had dragged you to a bar to âmeet peopleâ. You being well, you, had ended up as their babysitter for the night. One of themâRai, you were a bridesmaid at her wedding last monthâhad been hitting on a visibly-uncomfortable Jimmy Olsen who was there with Lois, Cat, and Clark to celebrate the latterâs promotion.Â
You had stepped in, then, telling Rai that actually, youâd like to take him home. Her happiness for a successful mission of getting you a guy triumphed over her attraction to Jimmy. When she left, Jimmy tried to reject you gently, before you wave him off and tell him that you are not, and will never be, interested in either romantic and sexual relations with anyone of any gender.Â
Needless to say, he has clung onto you ever since.Â
Jimmy orders you a drink, paying despite earlierâs words of having you buy him a drink. Itâs your second one and his third.
Youâre talking to Cat at your table while Jimmy waits for the drink, Lois and Clark are arguing at the pool table. Itâs the sort of place thatâs spacious, but not too big, decorated in vintage posters and well-used dart boards. A low key celebration among friends, Cat had called it, opting for a more casual vibe than the clubs she liked.Â
âHi, ladies,â a masculine voice interrupts. You look upâitâs a guy you donât recognize. He has a beard, with bulging muscles. Your eyes catch Catâs, who just raises an eyebrow in intrigue. He sets down two drinks on the table. âMy friendââ he tilts his head to his right. Sure enough, a group of guys are watching the interaction. The blond one raises his drink in acknowledgement. ââwould like to say hi to two pretty ladies.â
His eyes glint at Cat, before settling at you. He follows your figure, your bare legs in a strappy ballerina heels, a short dress, then your hair. A corner of his lips lifted up. The grin he thinks is sexy now turns predatory. Even Cat wonât stand for that.
âSorry, weâre not here for that tonight,â she says, sweet as a peach.
âFor what?â he grins again. âFor making new friends?â
You take a deep breath, patience running thin after the day youâve had. âBeat it, pal, weâre not interested.â
His arm shoots out, resting on the back of your chair. Heâs closer now, the smell of cigarette from his mouth, his shirt, is unmistakeable. You recoil, folding in on yourself. âAw, donât be like that, sweetheartââ
âThe ladies said, fuck off, dude,â Jimmy stands in front of you, creating a barrier with his body. That guy is bigger than Jimmy, easily, but your best friend is undeterred.
âSheâs yours, man?â the guy asks, almost mocking. âYou shouldnât have left her alone, then.â
âSheâs not alone,â Cat grumbles, arms crossing across her chest.Â
âIs there a problem here?â Clark stands behind Jimmy, effectively blocking your view of the guy. Heâs a big guy, bigger than the stranger, especially when he stops slouching. Youâre grateful for that. Lois rests one arm around Cat protectively.Â
âShouldnât be a problem if this guy and his buddies will leave us alone,â Jimmy challenges.Â
Itâs a stand off for another five seconds, before the guy scoffs and backs away. âAlright, man, she ainât worth it anyway.â
Jimmy pounces, only getting two steps forward before Clark holds him with one arm across his shoulder. The guy flinches, then walks back to his group in defeat.Â
You sigh, relieved, wrapping your arms around Jimmyâs waist and burying your head in his shirt.Â
âNever leave me again,â you say, as his arms comes around your shoulders.Â
âI know, I know,â he sways on his heels, moving you with him. Then, he addresses the group. âWanna get burgers instead?â
âPlease,â Cat groans, desperate to salvage her night, followed by a chorus of agreement from the others.Â
Jimmy lifts you up, his arms never leaving your waist as the five of you walk out the bar. Not before you flip the guy and his friends off, though.Â
Itâs fine. If they get angry, you know your best friend has your back.Â
