Dean and Cas have been good friends ever since Charlie introduced them. Best friends, even. So what if more feelings might lurk beneath the surface â itâs not like either would ever act on them and risk the good thing they already have.Â
But a few brief nights together during a shared heat/rut cycle threaten to jeopardize that delicate balance. Especially when they each find out life changing news shortly afterwards.

âYou got any New Yearâs resolutions you gonna make?âÂ
His breath clung to the air. He could feel the cold in his gums, and he briefly considered going back inside. Braving the cold was worth getting Cas to himself, so he stayed put.Â
âThe usual,â Cas said. âRun at least one marathon this year. Maybe two if I stay healthy.âÂ
âPssh, Cas, youâre doing it wrong. Your resolutionâs not supposed to be something youâre gonna do anyway. Itâs supposed to be something ridiculous that you can brag about for a few weeks before you lose interest.âÂ
âSo whatâs yours?âÂ
âGonna learn how to paint.âÂ
âTwenty-two, twenty-one, twenty!âÂ
Between the alcohol and the beautiful cityscape before them, peppered with snowflakes and all aglow for New Yearâs, Dean was feeling a little reckless.Â
âYou mind if I kiss you?â Dean asked as he looked down at Casâ lips. Chapped as always, but so damn tempting⌠âYâknow. For uh⌠for New Yearâs. When the ball drops.âÂ
Cas swallowed and Dean watched his adamâs apple bob. He wanted to sink his teeth into the meat of Casâ neck and claim him right then and there. Not the first time heâs had that thought about his best friend, but it was especially hard to ignore the temptation right now. He knew he shouldâve stopped after that third beerâŚÂ
âOkay.âÂ
âTen, nine, eightâŚâÂ
âYeah?â Dean perked up, unable to hide his excitement.Â
âItâs tradition, isnât it? Wouldnât want to break with tradition.âÂ
âNope, we sure wouldnât.âÂ
âEspecially not with my inadequate New Yearâs Resolution.âÂ
âYeah, you should probably try to cover your bases, just in case.âÂ
âThree, two, oneâŚâÂ
The apartment erupted into cheers and a cacophony of party poppers and noise makers. Dean barely heard it, his heart was beating too loudly. Cas leaned in a little and Dean forgot all about the chill. His world was nothing but blue eyes and the soft brush of lipsâŚÂ
They broke apart shortly after. Heâd never felt drunker in his life, but he was pretty sure it wasnât just the alcohol at this point. Oh no no no, it was something way more powerful than that.Â
Heâd done it. After all these years, heâd kissed Cas.Â
The last thing he clearly remembered from that night was leaning in for another tasteâŚ

I have never done a challenge fest before, and it was SO MUCH FUN. This is the art I made for @saltnhalo AMAZING fic, Little Blue Dragon. Iâm so grateful to have gotten a chance to be a part of it - sheâs truly an amazing writer and painting dragons is a challenge I never thought I would be able to do properly.
This year, the Pinefest family collectively produced 1,391,542 words of glorious pining, and 94 gorgeous pieces of art! If you havenât caught up, you can find the rebloggable masterpost of masterposts right here, or check out the ao3 collection.
Before we wrap up for this round, we just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who participated in the second Pinefest. As much behind the scenes work as we do, ultimately the success of this challenge comes down to all of the authors and artists whose outstanding talent and generosity make this fandom such a wonderful place to be.
So thank you, sincerely, for all the wonderful things youâve created âĽ
We canât wait to see you all again in the next round! Barring any major schedule changes, sign ups will open in early August--keep an eye on the blog for updates :)
Castiel Novak was sheltered growing up and is used to doing what everyone else wants, from taking suppressants, to working a job that he despises. But everything changes the moment that he follows the most tantalizing scent heâs ever smelled, and he collides with the source, literally. Their impact causes the Omega to drop the engagement ring box heâs holding, kneeling down to retrieve it on bended knee, to Castielâs horror. Confused, Castiel runs away from the Omega after jumping to conclusions.Â
Dean Winchester, a bakery owner, has always wanted a family and a home, but every Alpha heâs ever scented has been a major turn-off. Until his Alpha runs right into him while heâs picking up something for Samâs fiancee. Despite having waited for his mate for his entire life, Dean panics when he begins to believe that Cas is too good to be true. How will things change when Dean also learns that the Alpha may not be able to give him the family heâs always wanted?Â
Life keeps trying to throw them together but, like two ships in the night, they evade each other until theyâre both so miserable they have no choice but to communicate and try to decide if their bond is something worth deepening.Â

Today the air feels much cooler on Cas' flushing skin than the previous day, especially when that exquisite scent assaults him yet again. It seems to be much stronger and wafting from a side street, where the wind gently rolls between two buildings, a calmer air that gives his feet a clearer direction to take than yesterday.
He barely registers what he is doing, his instincts and his nose guiding the way. The stronger it gets, the more he looks around frantically, so he isnât looking where he is going when he collides with a very solid body.
There is so much going on, all at once, for Cas to process. Most overwhelming is that he is completely wrapped up in spiced apples and whiskey. Dazedly, he looks down at the man who has dropped to one of his knees to pick up a small black-velvet box that he must have dropped upon their impact with one another.Â
âOh my gosh, is he proposing?â Cas vaguely hears one person say before a hush settles, passerbys slowing and then stopping to see what the commotion is about.
The ring box has popped open and the man is frowning at its contents. Cas registers a flash of a camera somewhere in front of him, people are murmuring, and then narrowed green eyes lift up...
Cas comes crashing back down to his senses when he realizes that the most wonderful scent that heâs ever known is coming from a person. It wasnât a shop, or a bar, or some thing he was scenting. The man is the source. The man who is still squinting up at Cas as he snaps the ring box closed and rises to his feet unsteadily.Â

Two years ago, Dean walked away from Castiel after discovering his biggest secretâthat heâs a witch. Since then, Deanâs spent his days hunting alone, filling the emptiness inside with sex, booze, and the next case.
When he gets a desperate call for help from Castiel, Dean doesnât hesitate to go. But things in the small Maine town arenât what they seem, especially when he comes face to face with Castiel, who insists he wasnât the one to place the call.
Deanâs been given an opportunity to fix his past mistakes, but it means working alongside a very bitter Castiel, and Benny, a local deputy with knowledge of the supernatural, to figure out whatâs plaguing Newport and why it all seems fixated around Castiel.

Cas lets the anger dissipate from his face and points towards the tiny kitchen table. âYour clothes are over there. I washed your shirt and jacket late last night. Youâll need someone to stitch your shirt up for you though.â
Dean remembers heâs shirtless and, for both his and Casâ sake, goes and puts them on. He doesnât have to turn to feel Cas following his every move, and he wishes more than ever that things werenât like this between them.
âSo, that spell or whatever you just did⌠didnât sound like typical Latin,â he says, hoping to fill the silence thatâs crept between them.
âItâs Sumerian,â Cas answers simply. âYour wounds were so severe that the healing spells I would normally use would have been ineffective in treating them. I had to use something stronger.â
Dean makes a noise of agreement and nods. Heâs clearly lingering, but Cas is the one who called him out of the blue, so he figures Cas should be the one to finally break down and tell him whatâs going on.
âDean⌠why are you here?â
That wasnât what he was expecting to hear.
âCome again?â Dean asks.
âDean, we havenât spoken in over two years. Then, out of the blue, you show up at my place of work nearly bleeding to death with Benny begging me to save you.â A pained look crosses Casâ expression again briefly, and Dean is taken back to that night two years ago, wondering how Cas must feel experiencing the same thing all over again. âI donât know how you found this town, or found me, for that matter, but I have a right to know why youâre here.â
Thereâs anger seething underneath the surface of his skin. He didnât just drive all the way to Maine for Cas to act like this.
âThe hell are you talking about, Cas? Youâre the one who called me!â He feels his fists clench tight and his body go rigid with anger. âYou called me up, scared the hell outta me yelling about some monster, and then I drove all the way over here just to get attacked by whatever the hell that thing was!â To further prove his point, Dean whips his phone out and pulls up the text message from Cas. âLook, this is from you!â
Dean sees it. A brief flicker of shock and confusion in Casâ eyes. Cas hides it quickly and tilts his head while keeping his expression impassive and even. âDean, thatâs not my phone number.â

After Sam and Dean are arrested, Castiel is left alone and scrambling to find them. He knows theyâre locked away in a government facility, and heâs still able to hear their prayers, but no matter how he tries Castiel canât seem to track them. He chases leads and even attempts to hunt on his own, but Mary is AWOL, Crowley refuses to help, and Castielâs options are running out.Â
Weeks pass, Castielâs hope dwindles, and through it all Dean prays, keeping them connected. His voice is comforting, frustrating, and occasionally annoying, but in his solitude Castiel comes to cherish it. But then one day, without warning, Dean stops praying, and Castiel is forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about his feelings.
Keep reading for a sneak preview!
Castiel parks the Impala at the head of the road, then retrieves a machete from the trunk. There are a tiny set of initials inscribed into the wooden handle, and Castiel takes a moment to trace his thumb over the roughly-carved scratches. The work is neat, but juvenile. Thereâs an unexpected pang in his chest when he thinks about how young Dean must have been when he put them there.Â
A noise up the tree-lined driveway draws his attention, so Castiel shakes away his thoughts and closes the carâs trunk quietly. He starts moving down the road, mindful of his footfalls, until the old stone ruins come into view. Thereâs flickering firelight coming from inside; someone is clearly using the building. He slows his steps and grips the machete tighter.Â
âHey Cas. You awake?âÂ
Castiel startles. Deanâs usually asleep this time of night.Â
âWhat am I talking about. Youâre always awake. Itâs just that itâs after midnight â I think â and I canât sleep.â
âDean, this isnât the best time,â Castiel hisses, then he rolls his eyes. Talking to himself isnât terribly practical right now.
âI was just thinking, maybe you can talk to Mom for me. Iâve had a lot of time to think in here, obviously, and I keep thinking about how bad she and I left things.â
âCan we please talk about this later, Dean?â Castiel whispers, moving forward to put his back against a tree trunk. He cranes his neck around the tree and spots several figures moving back and forth in an open area of the ruins. Thereâs a low stone wall surrounding them and theyâre all silhouetted by the fire, so Castiel canât make out any details.Â
âBut just do me a favour, man. Let her know I get it. Her needing time away, needing space â I shouldnâtâve come down on her so hard for that.â
Castiel briefly abandons his spying and leans his head back against the tree. He closes his eyes and listens, blocking out every sound that isnât Dean.
âYâknow, Iâve spent my whole life thinking about her, this â this myth of a perfect, flawless mother, but somewhere along the line I kinda forgot she was a person. Thatâs not fair. And yâknow. . .â
He trails off for a moment, and Castiel just breathes.Â
âOkay look, thereâs actually a whole mess of crap for her and me to unpack here, so. . . maybe donât try to tell her all that. No offense, buddy, but youâve got some work to do with the whole âcommunicating human emotionsâ thing.â
âTrue,â Castiel murmurs.
âBut just tell her I get her needing to leave. And I donât blame her.â
Heâs silent again, and Castiel nods to himself. âIâll tell her.âÂ
ââKay. Iâm gonna try to sleep again. Good talk, buddy.â
âGoodnight, Dean,â Castiel says softly. He takes a moment to refocus, gently thumping his head against the tree a few times, but then he squares his shoulders and looks back around at the ruins.Â
