Killing time | Billie & Janika
There was a moment of the day where this room looked less creepy than usual. It was when the first rays of the morning sun hit on the sealed windows and reflected on the white floor. She wouldn’t understand the physics behind it but directly above her head, a faded rainbow would form on the ceiling. She caught a glimpse of it her first morning there and then again the next. Today was day three and the rainbow was gone.Â
She got off the bed in a sleepy mess, sitting a bit on the edge before finding the courage to deny the comfort of her bed and actually start the day. It must have been almost noon when she looked at her cellphone but outside it was darker than she would expect. A gloomy morning was all the excuse she needed for a second round of sleep, but she was going to be an adult here. She would fight the silly girl inside her screaming for 5 more minutes of rest while she dragged herself to the bathroom, starting her morning routine.Â
Once she was out of her shower and her hair was less of a vision of nightmares, she went downstairs. The rooms were empty so she guess Janika was either asleep or not here at all. A little piece and quiet would be much appreciates, she thought. These 4 days she had been there weren’t enough to assimilate the facts around her. Walking to the kitchen she started the coffee machine and grabbed an apple chewing it until the coffee was ready. She was never a breakfast kind of person.Â
She noticed a newspaper, resting on the pale counter that separated the kitchen from the living room. A soft touch by the DYAD institute to remind them how they’re always under their monitoring. Opening the paper she sunk herself in the sofa trying to get cozy in this time of silence. Dully looking through the columns she drunk her coffee not really sure of what to read. Turning the pages she found some job ads.
She had never worked before cause really there was no need to. She was fortunate enough to have enough money to have a living and some extra more for her travels. When she was not traveling she was at the university so there was really no time for her to work. Maybe now that she couldn’t escape this golden cage of DYAD, she could actually start a career. Of course this was not the one of the Sociologist since she was still not a graduate so maybe a killing time job could be enough for her.Â
“Coffee shop barista, part-time and pretty close from here….” She mumbled to herself before re-reading the ad.Â
