one week. 6 days and 18 hours. one excruciating week since gwen’s funeral, and 10 entire days since her death. since he last cradled her in his arms, desperately searching for signs of like in a very limp and PALE body. 10 days since he last heard her sweet voice, saw her wide gaze starring at him in HORROR as she fell to her death. 10 days since he last slept, 11 days since he had a full meal. and here he is, back at work like nothing at all happened.
well, not EXACTLY like nothing happened. he hasn’t actually talked to anybody since he walked through the doors with his camera. he went to the board and found out his assignment for the day, ignoring all the sympathetic stares and the nudges his colleagues were sharing. poor peter parker, spider-man got his girlfriend killed. what is he doing here? i heard they weren’t actually together when she died? whispers that his enhanced hearing can easily pick up, but he’s strategically IGNORING them. adjusting the strap on his shoulder, he heads for the desk of the girl he’s been assigned to. MICHELLE. michelle, who he’s pretty sure he’s gone to school with for quite some time. he’s only ever talked to her in passing. even working together, he’s managed to avoid ever being assigned to her stories. not on PURPOSE, but things just worked out that way. now however, being paired with her seems like it might be comforting. she knew gwen, hopefully she won’t be stupid enough to play twenty questions with him. plus, she’s quiet. that works for him.
he’d received as message from his boss that morning, saying that he didn’t need to worry about coming in. he could come back to work whenever he felt ready. apparently, talk around the office had finally reached him. but peter needs the MONEY. gwen’s death doesn’t mean his life stops, and without ben he and may are constantly struggling to pay the bills. this job has saved their home and kept them from STARVING on more than one occasion. plus, peter enjoys taking pictures. he knows what he’s doing when he’s behind the camera. it’s a sort of escape from reality, and it’s more than WELCOME at his time of his life.
placing his camera at the edge of her desk, he gives the girl what he THINKS is a friendly smile. it actually just looks weak and awkward, but it’s more than he thought he even had in him. wrinkling his nose to adjust the glasses he no longer needs, he points to his camera and then to the papers on her desk, nearly forgetting how to CONVERSATE for a moment. ❝ i’m taking your pictures. ❞ comes his flat greeting, nearly cringing at the sound of his cold introduction. shaking his head, he holds a hand up to indicate he should backtrack. ❝ uhm, i’m peter. i got assigned to your story. ❞ the boy restarts, motioning to his camera yet again. usually he takes the time to read the stories he’s assigned in order to get an idea of what pictures to take, but he hasn’t had the time, or the FOCUS to read. ❝ you’re michelle, right? ❞ // @dcesntcare
