Kallusâs day could be going better.
But he was half-naked and tied to a chair, and not completely naked and tied to the ceiling, so it could be going worse, too.
âFulcrum, huh?â ISB Major Dayja Collerand asked, giving the knife heâd carried since the academy a little toss. He always said it helped him think.
At this moment, âthinkâ hardly seemed the right word for what he was doing.
Those sharp eyes werenât thinkingâthey were playing.
This was a man whoâd long-since decided what he was going to do.
And heâd decided to enjoy it.
Dayja let out a little sigh, gave a matching little shrug. âBit of a stupid name, really,â he said in his characteristically bored drawl. âI mean, the first Fulcrum agent was a Jedi, right? Then we had Mr. ISB-killed-my-mommy-so-now-I-shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later, and now we haveâŚâ he trailed off, his eyes returning to rest on Kallusâs bruised and bloodied face and flickering with the recognition of a job well done. âYou. Well,â he added, his eyes cool once more. âI have you. Question is, what to do with you.â
Kallus tried to focus on keeping his breaths deep, slow, and steadyâbut the shock-collar wouldnât let him do that. It wouldnât even let him talk. He expected it wouldnât let him scream, either. That was an oddly comforting thought.
At any rate, this could go on for a while. Dayja was always hard to shut up once he picked up steam. Still, Kallus learned many years ago that where Dayja Collerand was concerned, everything was a game and the safest route was always just to play along.
That, or play dead, but he wasnât sure how he could work that at the moment.
âSee,â Dayja continued, one hand on his hip and knife dangling carelessly in the other. âThing is, Yularenâs always rather liked you. Problem isââhe pointed the knife at Kallus like a teacher pointing a stylus at just where Kallus had fucked up his grammarââTarkin is pissed. Like, I know the Emperorââ He paused to place an ironic hand on his heart and murmured âLong may he reign,â before continuing, âis big on his wholeââa casual wave of the knifeââsecret people away in the night so nobody knows whatâs happening and everybodyâs too scared to say anything but Tarkinââthe knife was back on Kallusââfavors demonstrations.â Dayja said this last word with a little back-and-forth wiggle of the knife that was a morbid approximation of air-quotations.
Impressive, really.
But then he always was good with a knife.
âSo, Tarkin tells me to find you, catch you, and make an example of you,â Dayja continued. âAnd Iâm thinking, for whom? You know?â Kallus felt compelled to nod along as Dayja said, âI mean, you canât make an example in a vacuum, there needs to be an audience! Only, âBe discreet,â he tells me.â Dayja turned to him and said with a little conspiratorial eye-roll, âBecause rebels,â in the same tone someone might say âPrimedays, am I right?â
âWhich, fair,â Dayja conceded with a tilt of his head, tapping the knife thoughtfully on his own chin. âBut that makes me wonder⌠if ISB are the only ones who know about this⌠who can the example be for if not ISB?â He placed a hand to his own heart and said, âYou can imagine my chagrin, Alexsandr.â
Kallus gave him a sympathetic nod and winced at the slight shock the motion gave him.
âI mean, ISB is the watchdog. And if the watchdog isnât there watching, well⌠who knows what the Navy and the Moffs will get up to? You agree, right?â
Kallus really did agree, so he nodded through the shock. Of course, he thought the ISB could probably do with a bit of oversight as well, but that was an interrogation for another time.
Dayja let out a dramatic groan and slid his knife back into its wrist sheath before unholstering his blaster. âKnives are more elegant, but you know: white uniform,â Dayja said with an apologetic scrunch of his nose. âYou understand.â He clicked his tongue and placed the nozzle against Kallusâs temple, blowing out a breath as he considered. âSuch a waste. You really do look good beat up, you know that?â
Kallus mouthed, Thanks.
Dayja plopped himself on Kallusâs lap like he was about to start telling him what he wanted for Life Day. âThing is?â He lowered his voice. âThe frustrating fracking thing is?â He lowered his voice even more and Kallus found himself leaning closer to listen.
Well, trying to.
âIf the ISB is keeping the Navy in line, but Grand Moff Cheekbones decides he doesnât need the ISB anymore, Iâm guessing heâs gotââDayja pointed his blaster skyward and Kallus found his eyes following its trajectory to the dripping ceiling before returning to Dayjaâs faceââhis cue from somebody higher. Which means His High Cloakiness doesnât think he needs ISB anymore. Which means he thinks he can keep the Navy in line himself. And thinking about what Sheevâs got that could keep the Navy in line from here to Wild Spaceââhe gave Kallusâs cheek a tap with his blaster to punctuate each word and finishedââmakesâmeânervous.â He tilted his head and asked. âThoughts?â
Kallus cocked a pointed eyebrow and Dayja gave him a startled, âOh, I am so sorry, Former-agent Kallus, I totally forgot.â He snorted a laugh and said, âAnd here I was thinking you were just a good listener.â
Once the collar was loosened a few notches, Kallus swallowed, working his jaw before croaking out, âSounds to me like the only thing keeping anything in line is the Rebellion.â
Dayja sagged his shoulders against Kallusâs chest. âOne of us had to say it, I guess.â He sighed and began running a finger absently along the barrel of his blaster, his mouth twisted in a pensive frown. âDonât suppose you know what it is? Tarkinâs shiny new watchdog?â
âYouâre really put out, arenât you?â Kallus observed.
Dayja threw up his hands. âI am! I put a lot of years into this agency, and my retirement plan is all tied up inââ Dayja cut himself off with an agitated wave of the blaster and said, âNot the most important point right now, but yeah!â He turned to face Kallus. âDo rebels have dental?â
âConsidering you lot keep kidnapping all the scientists and doctors and we keep rescuing them, Iâd say yes.â
âI expect I can do more good from here,â Dayja said, plucking at his white uniform. âUnlike you, Iâm actually a decent shake and undercover soâŚâ he trailed off with a shrug
âPerhaps.â Kallus licked his lips and said, âIn which case, I suppose weâll need to make this look convincing.â
âYour getting away, you mean?â Dayja confirmed, and Kallus hummed a confirmation.
As Dayja nodded absently, Kallus said, âYou know⌠I expect youâd look good beat up, too.â
Dayja gave him a pleased little smile. âI bet I do.â He sighed and tapped his chin with the nozzle of his blaster. âHow longâs it been? Since sparring practice?â
âFinal year at Royal Imperial, soââ Kallus cocked his head back and forth as he considered. âFifteen years?â
âWhat, really?â Dayja asked. âI thought we fucked during ISB training.â
âNo,â Kallus said mildly. âI went off-world fairly early on to train on an ISD.â
Dayja blinked. âThen who was I fucking?â
âI have no idea, Dayj,â Kallus said. Under his breath, he added, âBut from what I hear, most everybody.â
Dayja gave him a reprimanding slap on his thigh with the blaster. âOh, stop.â He let out a grating sigh and said, âYou know, this wouldâve been a hell of a lot easier if youâd just waited a few more months before growing some principles.â
âSorry,â Kallus said, biting back a smirk. âI thought you liked it hard.â
Dayja gave a small snort. âYeah, yeah⌠me throwing my career away is all one big dick joke to you, huh.â
âIt was big, youâll recall,â Kallus said with a groan as Dayja shifted on the chair to straddle Kallusâs thighs. âBut then, it doesnât exactly sound like youâve managed to keep your dicks straight.â He winced as the collar tightened one more notchâloose enough that he could still speak, but tight enough that it was a struggle.
It made him wonder if Dayja hadn't noticed that he'd slipped the knot on his left wrist.
Dayja shook his head and said in a long-suffering tone, âYou are so lucky youâre pretty, you know that?â
âSo,â Kallus began with a hopeful tone as Dayja trailed the blaster down the line of his chest. âAre you going to be taking this shock-collar off now?â
âAbsolutely not. And if you canât even get out of a few simple shyrackâs head knots, youâre not exactly going to be worth my time-and-risk investment, are you? SoâŚâ Dayja trailed off with a sympathetic click of his tongue, brushing sweat-soaked blonde hair from Kallusâs eyes to rest behind his ear. âThis is quite the bind youâve got yourself in, Fulcrum. How ever will you get yourself out?â
Kallus smirked.
Dayja had long-since decided what he was going to do.
And Kallus was going to enjoy it.
