David Ashley White
This year, the Texas Music Festival (TMF) shines its spotlight on noted composer and longtime University of Houston professor David Ashley White. White is among the world’s foremost composers of sacred music. His music has been performed around the globe and across the country. On June 16, Houstonians can hear his music during a special concert on campus.
“A Texas Original: Chamber Music of David Ashley White” (part of TMF’s Perspectives Series) will feature 10 pieces by the composer starting at 7:30 p.m. in UH’s Dudley Recital Hall. Works include “Elegy and Exaltation,” “The Peace of Wild Things,” “L’isola di S. Michele,” “The Elm is Scattering” and others.
White is indeed a Texas original. He grew up in south Texas with a passion for music. As a youth, he learned the saxophone and oboe and honed his performance skills in school bands and through private lessons. After high school, he found his way to UH, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in oboe performance and master’s degree in composition. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin, he returned to Cougar Country as a faculty member at the Moores School of Music (MSM) in 1977 and served...
