Kathryn Adams at PIXELATED GEEK is amazed by THE VERY BEST OF CAITLÍN R. KIERNAN.

There’s literally nothing out there quite like Kiernan’s stories, and they’re dazzling.  I came up from most of these blinking and disoriented and not at all sure what I’d just read.

On APB-SAL, Trent Walters discusses both the book and movie versions of Joe R. Lansdale’s COLD IN JULY.

The movie has a more visceral motive to launch the boys into a vigilante story. The protagonist and I had to turn our heads. Still, for the most part, the narrative and themes are intact. Both are worth checking out.

I'll lead with the quirkiest thing, since that's how I roll: Mingus Fingers by David Sandner and Jacob Weisman, coming from Fairwood Press in November. It's a short, small-format book -- probably a novellette -- and the speculative element seems to be,um, unique.

The collection is definitely worth investigating. Maybe you agree with the present ordering, or maybe you can try it as the book seems to suggest it wants to be. Either way, turning the page isn’t too hard a chore to get the book that you want. I, for one, want HOW TO FRACTURE A FAIRY TALE.

Edmonton Public Library recommends Lavie Tidhar’s THE VIOLENT CENTURY.

I read THE VIOLENT CENTURY after reading a great review of Tidhar's CENTRAL STATION and then settling for this earlier book while I waited. Good thing I did, because THE VIOLENT CENTURY is a very odd, very fresh take on classic superhero stories. Set mainly during WWII, it's a dark, suspenseful, and tragic reflection on heroism, love and friendship. And it's weird. A really weird and wonderful book.

For the March/April 2014 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Charles de Lint reviews The Treasury of the Fantastic as part of his regular column "Books To Look For."

Turns out there’s not a dud to be found. I hope this ends up in many libraries — particularly school libraries where, one might wish, that at least a few times a year it will prove to be the catalyst to an appreciation of the fantastic for some young reader who is of just the right age to be swallowed whole by its sense of wonder in the same way so many of us were in our own teenage years. And after that, one can also hope that they’ll use the stories and authors found in this treasury as a roadmap to the other marvels to be found in the early history of our field. 

A few converts along those lines would make this book’s existence all that more essential.

Before the fantasy of our current times there were the classics. Possibly little known to readers of the genre or perchance you’re familiar with many of the names that make up the collection in The Treasury of the Fantastic. And fantastic is exactly what you will get!

Normally when I review collections I give each piece an individual rating but there were just too many (44) in this one. Suffice to say many I adored, others were good and very few I slogged through. If you’re a classic literature can as well as a lover a fantasy then pick this up and experience some of the earlier works in the genre!
