A few years ago I meet two graduates of the Fanshawe Photography Program. While talking I asked about their post school photography ways. I asked what the job market was like? All of them worked at factories (not photography). I asked what kind of personal work they were shooting? None of them were shooting personal work because of various reasons (read: excuses). One of the gentlemen stated he was interested in shooting journalistically, then proceeded to explain why he couldn’t move to where he had a better chance of getting experience in photojournalism. Later that same year I was contacted by a photography student, again from Fanshawe College, looking for a co-op placement. A asked if she had a personal portfolio, not one filled with school assignments. No, she’s been too busy with school to do personal work. I asked if her goal was to be a wedding photographer (that’s what I do)? No, she wants to shoot advertising, editorial type work. She then continues to explain her reasons (read:excuses) why she can’t spend the summer in Toronto for her co-op with an actual advertising photographer. I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m picking on Fanshawe photography students, but that’s the industry I’m in and those are the students that I have experiences with. You may see a trend here, I’m talking about chasing dreams and having the inner fortitude to do what needs to be done to catch those dreams. For about two and a half years now, I’ve been shooting local creatives for a personal project called The Real London. I’ve met close to a hundred full time, part time and amateur creatives from around London (and a few beyond) and I’ve learned a lot from just speaking with them for an hour while shooting. Though many paths were taken among the creatives I met, there were many trends among them as well. Many of these people had to sacrifice something for their dreams. All of them had to work their asses off to get where they are now. Some traded having a “life” now so they could have a happier life later on down the road. This is what I’m getting at; at the moment, you have an advantage over life, you’re young. Make life easier and do the work now and live a happier and (according to some studies) longer life later. Know that dreams demand sacrifices. That can be the sacrifice of time, working longer hours for free. That could be the sacrifice of staying out of a serious relationship till you have climbed high enough in life. But hey! You’re young, you bounce. Just know that within reason, you can do whatever you want. You need to find your passion and figure out how to get paid for it. I can’t say this strongly enough, you want to be the best future self that you can be. Reality check…Not everyone is gonna live their dreams. Society need fry cooks and security guards. Someone need to collect the urinal cakes and ditches need to be dug. All you can do now is make sure that you’re not the ones that have to do it.
