David Dunn "The Overseer"
-Unbreakable (2000) by Mr. Night Shyamalan
There aren't many characters I love as dearly as the one played by Bruce Willis in Unbreakable.
I saw it a few years ago, after a childhood and adolescence steeped in comic books and everything that goes with them :
Deconstructions of superhero dynamics in darker or more realistic contexts, trashy parodies—by the time I was 18, I’d seen it all or so I thought. I was certainly still passionate—but jaded.
And then I saw this movie, and it blew me away. I could have been cynical about the usual tropes (the hero discovering his powers, the first mission, accepting his responsibilities. ..)
But no. This movie is pure.
And damn, that fight scene that really shows David isn’t particularly good at fighting but manages to hold his own thanks to his power, while The Orange man smashes him against the wall...
When you’re a superhero fan, we all have an idea of who we’d like to see come to our rescue.
And surprisingly, for me, it’s the Overseer.
