Thinking about the last 20 years with hayes as our anniversary nears.
Hayes and I got together when we were both 18, seniors in high school. I had a crush on him for a while but we didn't start dating until April 2005.
At the time he was working at a grocery store and I was a babysitter at a Jewish summer camp. I had like $500 in my savings account. Then we went to separate colleges (student loans) but moved in together in 2007, got married in 2010, got better and better jobs, and kept saving and saving along the way. There was a brief point in our lives where we really wanted kids, but then we decided against it (esp with a 'cant have kids' diagnosis) and instead wanted to put all our time and money into travel, with thoughts of adopting in the future (lol at a surprise baby for us at age 37).
Aside from our honeymoon, we went on our first real "expensive" trip in 2011, a roadtrip from Arizona to Washington. Our first international trip was in 2015 to Iceland (was supposed to be 2013, but the past is the past). And aside from Covid and when I was pregnant in 2024, we have taken at least one trip every year ever since then.
Along the way we bought a house and raised four dogs, now a baby. I know how privileged we are, but we put a lot of work into it. We had our share of roommates (so thankful those days are gone!) and living paycheck to paycheck. At one point we were like really broke and online poker just came out, unregulated, back in the day did not help our situation lolololz. And my technically self-employed job that I've had since 2012 where none of my taxes get taken out so I owe a large amount every fricken April, even though I pay quarterly. Seeing those bill amounts will never get easier.
But now twenty years later, I can look back and appreciate all we went through and all we put up with to make this last, make this work, and make us want to still be doing life together.
Comfy cozy view from bed, listening to the rain on roof of the yurt.
Yurt for our 19th anniversary and babymoon. Brought the pups so we can have more bonding time before baby arrives. Cody is happy up on the couch, Nory is passed out on the floor, lol. First time using a pellet stove. Wicked excited to sprawl out in that giant bed and for hayes to utilize the hot tub for his bad back.. and use the firepit on the deck once the rain stops!
Can't believe we've been together for 19 years. 4.17.2005. Really can't believe we made it this far without a kid (there were definitely scary accidents way back in college! Before i knew all about my endometriosis) and now that'll all change in a few weeks. Definitely didn't picture our 19th anniversary 8 months pregnant with no international trip to celebrate in sight. Glad to be on this journey with hayes, neither of us are excited yet (he was at one point but i think the fear of parenthood is getting to him), but at least we're in it together.

Dateaversary roadtrip. Our favorite brewery is Hudson Valley in Beacon, NY. They specialize in sour ipas (heart eyes) and today they had a pizza food truck! Making our stop extra special.
It was just their anniversary, so we've taken home a shit ton of beers to-go and we gave them a bunch of our breweries beer. So, for my last drink of the night, they topped it off with actual procecco! Just cos they had some on hand. It was a peach sour, so it tasted like a bellini. Wicked tasty!
Plus our hotel room. Hayes booked a suite overlooking the river this time around.
Our 18 year dateaversary will be spent on a roadtrip drinking sours and pilsners in NH-VT-NY-CT-RI-MA before ending the trip with a Revolution soccer game. (Photo from Sunday brunch)
I don't know how time can move so fast and slow all at once. Today is our 18th dateaversary! 4.17.2005 We were 18 years old when we started dating. Now we've been together the same amount of time?!? I can feel the years in my knees and the new wrinkles around my eyes, but then when I look at hayes I see the same funny 18 year old I fell in love with all those years ago. Blows my mind.
I'm still forever thankful he'll travel with me anywhere, including Iowa and Minnesota (left photo at Lake Superior in October) just to go to the elopement party of a gal I met here on tumblr in like 2009.
I don't know how I managed to find my person right in high school but I'm thankful whatever forces in the universe brings people together did that for us.
Just thankful for hayes.
