Datalands
Datalands is an independent creative studio who "Transform knowledge into narratives" (Datalands, 2023).
I have decided to look into this agency because they focus on visually showing information. This will help to inform my own experiments with infographics because it will show me industry standard work surrounding the subject. It will also help to inform my colour and type choices.
The shape of neuroanalytics, 2020
This project focuses on creating a visual report on customers reactions to contextual advertising. They focused on emotions and neural reactions.
I found this project quite interesting because when I first looked at it I did not realise it was a report. It looks fun and creative which is not something I would associate with a report.I like how they have used illustrations and colours to represent the information. This allows the audience to interpret the information whilst keeping the viuals aesthetically pleasing and engaging. BY using a minimalist style for the images, they have made them simple and easier to understand. I like how the white lines and bright colours stand out from the dark backgrounds because this emphasises the images. Furthermore, I am curious whether the colours relate to the customer's emotional reaction or represent something else in the report. This has made me curious about how I may be able to use colour within my work to represent information instead of numbers or text. I could look at colour theory to see what colours are generally associated with to make my representation easy to understand.
Furthermore, I find it interesting that they have separated the images from the text. Only tertiary text is placed on the page with images, in a small font on the top or bottom of the page. This makes the text hidden because the image is the only thing your eye is drawn too. The main text is place on a separate page and they use negative space to separate the text from the connected page of images. This shows that the image is the main part of the report and the text is only additional information. I like this method because it makes the information more engaging than using text as the main representation. They have used long line lengths which makes the text look too tiring to read. This encourages the reader to look at the images instead which implies the text should not be read.
This project has shown me that text is not always necessary for infographics. Therefore I will experiment with image based representations of my research to present my opinion and emotions to my audience.
Microsoft 2021
For this project, Dataland developed a collection of symbols that represented concepts.
I found this project interesting because they have used shapes to represent text. This means the project is solely image based and relies on the audience understanding the information by using a key. I like how this is purely visual which appeals to creative thinkers. I think this method of conveying information will engage my audience because it looks visually interesting and does not require them to read a large block of text. I could use this method to create a way to plan time or a project on a whole instead of using a table or to do list. This will make planning fun and stop it feeling like a chore.
However, I will need to make sure that the images are easy to understand. I can do this by looking at semiotics and symbols to inform my design choices. I am also interested in their use of colour, as each symbol has a different combination of the colour pallet. Could I use colours within my tool to represent a certain theme, emotion or time? I will experiment with this idea within my initial ideas to see whether it could be useful.
