Prosperity in the Metro Boston Region

Metro Boston is one of the most economically powerful regions in the world and yet it ranks among the nation’s worst for income inequality. Our region’s prosperity depends on economic growth and security for all of our businesses and families. This panel looks at prosperity and wealth in Boston at the regional and local scale. The Boston Indicators Project presents on the various measures of opportunity that attempt to identify opportunity dynamics of a region. The Metropolitan Area Planning Council presents findings from their Regional Prosperity Indicators that show how the region is faring compared to other metropolitan areas and how prosperity plays out differently for different industries and communities within the region. The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston presents findings from The Color of Wealth in Boston, a detailed report on wealth inequality in Boston by race and ethnicity.

Using Data to Tell a Story

Data has become an essential tool of journalists and residents, newsrooms and community organizations alike. But as the amount of data available continues to grow, being able to tell a good story is just as important as the data itself. This panel of journalists, communications professionals, and researchers discuss everything from the nuts ­and ­bolts of a data ­driven press story to new tools for interactive data journalism to an emerging field of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science that is advancing the way we and the media tell our stories.

Researching What Matters with Community Members

Often the most effective research is done when community members can partner with researchers. These presentations focus on new effective methodologies and projects where researchers partner with Latino, Black and Youth community members to better understand and address issues such as health disparities and youth employment.
