He flinches when he hears that, like it’s a reflex that can’t be helped. It’s one thing for the woman to raise him to know, by suspicion, that under her nose he’s harboring wickedness. But to have someone so wholly uninvolved in his home know makes him wonder if everyone can see that he’s tainted, that something dark lurks under his skin constantly.
“Isn’t that why any of us reach for the light? Because sin traps and blinds?” He hopes she means this in some abstract sense. All he can think now is what does she know? Has she seen him speaking too familiarly with the wrong strangers? Seen the way his eyes linger over handsome men? Seen the way he’s never quite himself when magic inside has no outlet? He feels almost faint under the weight of possibility.
“Or do you have something specific, Ms. Fowler?”

it was not her intention to be cruel, but he was at a difficult age. it was so easy to lose children to the world, if one was not careful. it was so easy to succumb to temptation, so easy to look at the glitz and glamour of their modern age and be dazzled by it, and in doing so fall helplessly into hellfire. she did not want that to happen to him.
