She couldn’t see very far ahead of her, eyes squinting hard against the icy downfall that beat at her face. That beat at everything. She shielded her backpack in her arms, and felt water drip down her neck, regretting not for the first time her lack of an umbrella. Even a poncho would have helped!
The thought of running crossed her mind. If she made a dash for it she’d certainly be out of this misery sooner. But she’d have to don her backpack, and books are unfortunately less water-resistant than people.
Suddenly the barrage on her skin lessened, and Nicole heard the more comforting sound of rain bouncing harmlessly off plastic. She blinked the water from her eyes and looked to her savior, somewhat incredulously. She certainly didn’t expect any help, let alone from someone she somewhat admired... Nicole felt a blush spread across her cheeks, already red from the wind.
“T-thanks.”
She turned her gaze to the bag in her arms in embarrassment, doing her best to match her pace to the other weapon. It was not instantaneous, but she did work up the courage to ask her, quite ready to be turned down, “D’you think you could... hunker down a bit?”
Damn height differences.
