Hello there, this is/was my personal blog which is now going to be dedicated to my research and work for my Honours year at university. So like any one else doing an Honours degree I have to choose a subject but before I go on about how much i love animation and character design i thought id give a little insight into why im doing what im doing.

Awhile ago i was watching Tangled with the unofficial commentary(thank you Clay Kaytis) when it was pointed out in the scene where Flynn gets stabbed that there is no blood on the knife mother Gothel is holding. They also said that there was blood on the knife(naturally as a guy just got stabbed) but due to age rating rules they had to take it out or else it would go up to a 12. I thought this was ridiculous, why should it matter, the guy got stabbed! There should be blood on that knife! It also made me think about in Japan, Miyazaki has made amazing films which are visually beautiful and they had some sort of message behind them, but they also don't really cater for a specific genre of audience unlike Disney or any other big western animation studios do. Which really sucks, i would love to see Disney do animation that didn't have these type of limitations.

I am going to use Japanese animation and culture to influence my ideas for creating stories and characters. I will also look at western animation and their influences for their movies to see if there is a way i could take that core idea and make something completely opposite. I am very keen to have multiple characters in the animation so i can have some very nice emotional acting going on. I am unsure right now if i will create my own characters for 3D animation or find suitable ones online to allow for maximum animation time. But i do know that i want it to be visually awesome and have been looking at games and and animations that are 3D but have a 2D feel/look to them(ill try to get images/videos of them on here soon). As i am not an environment designer i might find someone on my course specialising in environments to create beautiful scenery for my 3D animation. I am also in contact with a 3D character rigger that seems keen to rig characters if i choose to make my own.

So that's what i want to create, an animation for a western audience that doesn't have limitations due to it being catered for a specific audience. I want it to be gory or violent or scary if it has to be but only if that's what the story needs. The animation might be a short or some sort of trailer depending on the story and how long it ends up becoming.

Hopefully that makes scenes to someone. I am so excited to get things started on this, hopefully in 8 months ill have something close to what i described up there to show(assuming i dont completly change my mind about the entire thing).
