One of the two bonnets included in this photo remembers Patience Merchant. Patience was a 54 year old cook/ pastry cook with 5 children from Frome, Somerset. Patience was sentenced to 14 years, transported to Van Diemen's Land, for receiving a pair of stolen shoes - from her son. Her Conduct Record shows her Ticket-of-Leave and Conditional Pardon dates. She was described as 'good', 'Quiet, well behaved'.

This exhibition is twofold. The outdoor installation attracts attention taking the female convict story into the public arena. Inside Narryna you will see another part of the story as evoked through the 'Roses from the Heart' Memorial journey to date. Tasmanian artist Christina Henri is still working on the completion of the Memorial. 500 bonnets required to reach the 25,566 bonnet target. Christina is now concentrating on Roses from the Heart Stage 2 - the securing of an appropriate space for the bonnet collection to be showcased permanently as a cultural attraction.
