“You can tell me everything, but I'm not gonna ask."
It feels almost too corny to have had this kind of moment so "late" (im not actually that old...) in life -- Usually this kind if thing you;d expect to happen as you break away from adolescence as a teen. But Anonymous/Somebody in Our Dreams At Dusk is pretty much the first and only time I've ever felt represented in any form of media.
Due to a lot of circumstantial things that I’m not about to get into here, I've lived my whole life in a lot of grayzones and liminal spaces, socially. Moreover, I’ve not just “not-been-XYZ,” I’ve always been “not-XYZ-enough;” and having to grow up and find myself economically, racially, and genderally[sic] rejected from two sides of every pair of at odds categories has made it extremely hard to define what I am comfortable with, because I’ve continually only ever been defined by what I’m not. Consequently the comfort that inclusivity and labels seem to give most people never really made a lot of sense to me, making not only comfort with specific labels an alien concept, but in fact comfort with any labels.
Reading about this character's rationale though, (and even about their uncertainties about claiming it as an identity at all) feel like being seen for the first time in my life. I didn't think it would feel like this. And it's so alien to me now that I cant even tell if I like it or not.
