MUSCLE SHOALS THEY HAVE THE SWAMPERS, no. 2. There’s a Muscle Shoals studios doc on Netflix that I 100% recommend if you’re even a little interested in music. Shakespearean, almost. (Thanks for the tip, Mike Jaensson.) Probably the best part is when they’re talking about #arethafranklin coming down and all the trouble they had until Spooner Oldham hit the right groove: “Guys? I think Spooner’s got it,” Dan Penn (who I actually saw in the 80s, at @thebluebirdbar) told the room. I’m quoting all that from memory, but it’s so memorable I bet I got it right. Anyway, the two songs on here recorded at Muscle Shoals (one written by Dan Penn) are terrific, and of course the rest are amazing, too—and she asked all the Bubba-looking musicians from Muscle Shoals to New York City to back her up on these! So whatever you were picturing as her backing band on “Respect,” etc., you were probably wrong.
