@dankovskyy / here.
He stretches out like a cat, content in a bed that is not his while he watches the other man move around. This is a habit of his now —— invading Artemy’s space, where he does not quite belong or fit in. He could have left when it was all over, but what point is there? Thanatica is a pile of ash. His career is gone. So this town does not suit him, but it’s as good a place as any to stay for now. It’s funny how when he’s come to terms with this is when the other man seems intent on leaving himself.
(The house is —— well. Cleaner than the last time he was here. He had been there while the other man sorted through his father’s belongings, more for moral support than anything. Artemy looks more like an ordinary man in these surroundings than he ever did in his workshop.)
Daniil rolls over onto his side to watch Artemy, pillowing his head in his arms. “Then leave,” he responds simply. “Pack your bags. Find a successor to take up your mantle. Run back to the capital —— leave the country if that’s what you wish. But I know you too well, Tyoma —— if you leave, all you’ll ever talk about are the reasons you should’ve stayed.”
He can’t really understand the burden of it. He’s never had a legacy to inherit the way Artemy has taken his own up. But he understands responsibility, and he understands duty, to oneself if nothing else. Daniil closes his eyes and yawns.
“Wherever you go —— be certain it’s what you want, because it will haunt you every hour of every day otherwise.”
artemy looks up from where he’s folding clothes, and pauses for a few seconds. ❝ that’s not what i mean. you don’t understand ------------- i can’t leave. not that i’d want to, i have responsibilities. sticky and murky can survive on their own, i know that, but they’re children. they shouldn’t have to. no, it’s not that i want to leave. ❞ it’s just that he’s been thinking a lot about everything and daniil hasn’t stopped him yet. mostly because this is the first time that he’s brought it up.
❝ you have a degree. you’re the bachelor. i was six months away from graduating. i can’t exactly do that now, and you’re going to think i’m a fraud forever. ❞ he’s only half serious ; there’s a fond smile on his face. but he’d be lying if he said it didn’t bother him, just a little. ❝ it’s so hard to explain. emshen cannot let their dead relatives have outstanding obligations or we don’t have any right to our titles. father was a menkhu. i always knew one day i’d have to take that role for myself, but . . . i didn’t think it would be so soon. i’ve never stayed in a place for more than a few months and now i’m back in the house i grew up in. ❞
he’s trying to think of the words to explain his predicament to daniil. he wouldn’t understand, would he ? ❝ it was all so soon. too soon. it’s a lot. and i never expected to be anybody’s guardian. ❞ with that, artemy sets the shirt he’s holding aside and gets up out of his chair and comes over to gently kiss daniil. ❝ if ever there was a time to run away, it would be now. but i could never do that. it’s just a little . . . overwhelming. hard to accept. i think you know what i mean. ❞
