“I have more than 20 years experience working with school systems and everything, I just enjoy working with the kids every day. I started doing cross guarding after I read a little article in the front of the school. I care about how children are getting to and from school. Helping them get across means we watch out for the oncoming traffic, and I know it’s hard for them to cross. There are some courteous people who do stop. My being the crossing guard here helps them get across safely a little bit more, helps them to and from school. And I appreciate the waves from parents, too. I always wave back.”

“I work at Foodie Kids, teaching kids cooking classes. Food makes me really happy. I just love every aspect of it. I think it’s beautiful and artistic. I love the whole scientific aspect of it — it’s like you never get bored. I love the whole eating out and being served and then I also love feeding other people.”

“When I was coming up, I always wanted to do contracting work. My dad and my uncles taught me how to sandblast and drywall, and all that stuff. I like jobs that are freedom work. That means the type of job where you know what you’re doing, and you aren’t going to have anybody standing over you. I don’t like that stuff. I like to feel free, do my thing. I learned about the buses in 2007. I had an accident that left me handicapped. I got a metal hip replacement, and I started to have to learn how to take buses. It’s more efficient for me.”

“I do bookkeeping, audit and tax. I enjoy helping people understand how business works. But I’ve always been interested in starting a bar of some sort. Most bars and restaurants do fail, so that’s kind of what makes you hesitant to even get into something like that. You need an amazing location. It has to be entertaining. But even if you have both of those things, nothing is a given. On West 6th, there’s this one area where this particular bar is doomed, it can’t stay open. Every time a new one opens in that space it closes down. And it always blew my mind that someone would keep buying the same spot.”

“I wanted to be a musician, that’s why I moved here from Indiana about 16 years ago. I just wanted to do something with music, came down here, and then got into the service industry. Just moved my way up here and now I run the place. I take the bus — that’s mostly how I get where I need to go. It’s extremely convenient. I was actually able to get rid of my vehicle a few years ago. It was an extra expense and a piece of junk anyway. I see a good mix of people every day on the bus. A lot of people like working on the bus on their laptops with the Wi-Fi and stuff. It’s a good mix of people — professionals, students — just across the board.”

“I picked up my mom’s camera when I was 13. I just didn’t really put it down. I couldn’t really explain it. Photographing people never really gets old — there’s always something new, it’s always different. Probably in the last two or three years, I’ve had a few people say they can identify my style and they notice it about me. Which is flattering to me because I feel like I’m always learning, and I’m always uncertain and I’m always trying to figure out what’s what. For someone to say, ‘I know your pictures when I see them’ is greatly rewarding, because I guess my vision is more consistent than I thought, as far as my style goes.”

“I talk to a lot of people who have cars, but traffic gets too bad. I’ve timed it with my sister, and it took me longer to get here in a car than on a bus. It was just ridiculous. The bus saves a lot of time. It’s like a straight shot and route, and then you’re good to hop off and walk down the street where you need to go. Pretty chill.”

“After I totaled my truck, we suddenly became a one-vehicle family. Had it not been for the MetroRail, it would’ve been really inconvenient for my wife to drive me all the way from Taylor, where we live, into downtown for work. That helped us with gas bills, too. It helped me out big time in a tough spot.”
