Again my eyes wandered over the crowd. So many people – strangers – knew this unconventional couple of their time. I had heard of their devotion to reach out to anyone in a time of need, and apparently they had received many friends in return.

All I know is the cologne-stained furniture in my grandfather’s mansion and the overwhelming amount of tobacco smoke fluming from his cigars. I remember dark speeches about how he was already on his death bed, and raised eyebrows that meant I had gained a small bit of approval or that Julian was somewhere nearby.
