Female Amateur Hero x Male Villain Doctor ^* (pt. 9)
Bender's stamps with heavy beats and not much else. Whatever melody is supposed to be strung throughout the music is lost against the sea of talking, yelling, and moving bodies.
Villain grips Hero's wrist the whole way inside. While she's sure it's to keep her from running away, Hero doesn't mind his iron vise once they dare to enter the sea of bodies. It's almost impossible to move without being battered on all sides. The oppressive smell of body odor, mixed with alcohol and something a little more lethal, chokes Hero with the fumes.
"Why are we here, again?" She shouts to Villain. He's right next to her but she's not in a mood to repeat herself.
"Ask Diva," he shouts back, "I'm just here for the shots."
"Ahhh, but what kind of shots, doctor?" Brute interjects over both of them, throwing an arm each across their shoulders and grinning from ear to ear like a horror mascot.
Villain shoulders Brute's chest, "Just don't overdose, dumbass. I didn't bring any antidotes."
Brute snorts, "Pffft, nobody cares about your antidotes. Never use them, anyway."
"That can't be true," Villain mutters.
"No, he's right, doc honey, we don't," Villainess swats disaffectedly, her perfect hair already mussed up from pushing through all the bodies. Popping out a flip mirror, she fixes her smeared lipstick. "But don't let that keep you from following your dreams or whatever. Now! Starsugar, you ready to put in the late night shift for mama?"
Hero's gut churns. Something in her veins screams a bad idea is about to be pushed on her, "What's that look like?"
With a sudden tug, Villainess drags Hero from Villain's side. In seconds the doctor is swallowed up from Hero's line of sight. She swears he flashes her a "good luck, have fun," smile at her before the wall of strangers pushes her against Villainess' wiry body. Hero repeats her question but Villainess shouts something back about "Wait and see."
The floor looks battered as shit. A bunch of incongruent squares worn down so bad, Hero could barely tell what their original colors were supposed to be.
"What am I supposed to do, um…what was your name again?"
Villainess waves her hand, "Babydoll, if you ain't gonna remember, what's the point of repeating? Now! I need you to do your zap-zapping and fix the dancefloor."
"It lights up?"
"No, I miss the smell of sizzling flesh. Of course, it lights up!" She takes a disgruntled huff of her cigarette, a clear attempt to compose herself, "They built the floor in '72. Shit thing was already on its last legs by the time we younguns were kicking it in '94. Now, Arnie doesn't want to fix it up cuz he had to go and get a double hip replacement like the broke bum he is."
Reaching into her handbag, she pulls out a wrench.
"There's a center panel in the middle of the floor. Bang on it a few times with this and it'll open right up for you."
Hero looks toward the spot Villainess points to. Even with the few patrons on the dancefloor, she can barely catch a glimpse of the panel. "How is that safe?"
"Read the room, honey. If we could be doing safe, we wouldn't be slumming it at the dog's end of a back alley dumpster."
Hero blinks. "You brought me here."
"Exactly," Villainess gestures the wrench at her, "Heroes take care of this shit so the rest of us can be 'safe.'"
Hero's brow furrows. Her desperation to be called a Hero contrasts with how insulted she feels being given that title while here: dressed in Villainess' sequin-belted capris and asymmetrically-cropped glitter hoodie. The bygone relics she wears still carry the whiff of a perfume reeking with bubblegum and bad decisions.
She reaches for the wrench, "Hadn't you mentioned something about a bet, though?"
Swinging the wrench out of Hero's grasp, Villainess tosses the it into the pit, "Chop, chop, honey boo, this floor ain't gonna light itself!"
Hero bites down an unsavory word--not that Villainess would have heard it over the noise--and climbs down after the discarded tool. Awkwardly holding the damn thing, she moves through the dancers like a living cardboard cutout.
Something inside her warns this is too simple a job, but the villains haven't been complicated so far. If only she could use that to her advantage and finally escape!
Sure enough, she finds the center panel, only noticeable because it's sunk lower down into the floor. Kneeling down--almost getting a kick in the eye from a tipsy bitch--Hero bangs open the panel door.
God, she knew the wires would look bad, but not worse than the electrical box at the Villains' hideout. Dust cakes the wiring and she can see where the rubber is frayed to reveal individually coated wires. For as electrically illiterate she is, even she can tell this is bad news.
But as she gingerly fidgets with the wiring, her eyes can't help but wander to all the couples, singles and others mingling out here on the floor. Yes, it's supposed to be a dancefloor, but the lack of lighting makes it a prime spot for making out.
An ache churns in her ribs. She misses that feeling. Which one, she's not sure, but they're all bubbling to the surface regardless.
She hates how out of place she feels, even incognito. She should just pretend to fix the floor and then try to make it out on her own.
An unintelligible question overhead makes her look up. The ten closest people are staring down at her with all the colors of confusion.
"I'm maintenance," she mumbles.
But hardly do her fingers touch the currents, when power vaults through the circuitry. Light blares into the floor tires, blinding the ceiling with patches of white, yellow, and purple.
She falls back, stunned and confused.
How was that so fast? It's like the wires were begging to be turned on. She had to fight the currents at the villains' hideout, why--why was this so easy?
Any hope Hero had to escape is all but crushed in the chaos that follows.
Some people freak out, falling back and blinded by the lights. Other, older folks start throwing it back. Shadows blur into the ceiling, ghoulish shapes that stamp with practiced rhythm.
Hero scans around for any of the villains. An icy feeling drops to the pit of her stomach when she sees Villainess at the rim of the floor, grinning down at her like a nightmare shocked into life.
The woman flicks something into the mosh pit of chaos. A single business card lands center of a purple square at Hero's feet. She picks it up. Whatever business had been on the card is scratched out--there's still a governmental crest in the top right corner--but scrawled across in felt-tipped calligraphy, reads:
Play dumb games, win dumb prizes
In the distraction time, Villainess grabs a mic from the DJ and starts belting an oldie that sounds like a mix of TLC and Aerosmith. The tide of people running to and from the floor ebbs and flows like Hero's currents, trapping her in its circle.
Corrosive panic chews through Hero's gut. Where's the doc? She needs to find him. Is that what Villainess planned all along?
"Hey, Arnie, I won the bet, sucka!" Diva yells into the mic. All attention turns to her and to the heavy-set, greasy man behind the bar, "Told you I'd get that damn floor to light up again. Whatcha gonna do now, huh, honey?"
The man at the counter with a beer gut folds his arms. With a scrawny arm, he removes the blunt in between his crooked teeth.
"Ya celebratin' too soon, bitch," he drawls, almost bored. He gestures beside and only then does Hero notice the two armed women in hoodies and covid masks, "Girls...light it up."
