I've watched some of mlqc videos on youtube, and i think, victor in CN server is more cool in gentle and sweet vibe than the one in EN server which more cool in arrogant vibe 😆 what do you think?
Hello! I can’t say I’ve watched many videos of MLQC EN because more often than not the translations give me the creeps, but based on the ones that I have watched for comparison purposes, I mostly agree with what you’ve said.
To refine on it further, I’d say that Li Zeyan (CN version of Victor) is calm and collected, confident in his own ability, yet endearing in his own way, and his interactions with MC continually reflect this. He says the sweetest things, but with a hint of 霸气 (roughly translates to arrogance).
When it comes to EN Victor, these lines can come across as simply arrogant or overly cheesy, which may seem out of character for him. I think this is in part due to an issue of translation: Elex often likes to omit idioms in its translations, or miss out certain nuances even if it does attempt to do so.
For fairness, I’m only going to compare quotes that have been released in both EN and CN. So here goes:
Li Zeyan: No matter which path you take, no matter how different it is from mine, you can only arrive at the same destination as me.
Victor: Whichever path you take, you’ll always find me at the end.
—殊途之约 / Maze Date
It’s a subtle difference, but there’s a hint of arrogance in Li Zeyan’s line amongst all that sweetness. As is befitting of his CEO status, he’s used to having things go his way, and that includes MC being with him, and only him. Compare that to Victor’s “you’ll always find me at the end”. There’s no mention of it being only him MC has to be with, unlike Li Zeyan’s, and it’s a bit too saccharine for me.
Here’s another example:
Li Zeyan: How could I permit the student I taught personally to be slighted by others?
Victor: A student I taught personally. Who could deny her?
—跳舞之约 / Dance Date
Here, Li Zeyan’s line has a sense of agency which Victor’s lacks. Like everything else about him, his “coming to MC’s rescue” when her dance partner calls off on her is so subtle that the most negligent of us would probably miss it. But this just makes him all the sweeter, without being overly mawkish. As for Victor’s line... Well, it’s arrogant in a Victor way, but it doesn’t quite contain that same sweetness. It just sounds like him not being able to resist MC, which isn’t quite on the same level as Li Zeyan actively looking out for MC.
Clearly I’m biased towards the CN version, but I hope I’ve not coloured this analysis too much with it. (Right.) That said, I do wish they’d take these nuances into account when translating, because they paint a delightful side of Li Zeyan that the EN players don’t always get to see.
