(this switches between POVs again. do you guys like that? should I keep doing that? I can’t decide)
PART ONE
PART TWO
--
Logan and Ashton would both be waiting for me outside, but I had a feeling that there was one I’d rather see.
--
“Who the fuck do you think you are?” Logan turned around to me and I crossed my arms over my chest. He wasn’t quite as tall as me, so I had to look down at him.
“Helping out a friend.” I said.
“Well don’t, alright? You should probably go.” He said, turning to walk back to the door. I rolled my eyes and walked down the hallway. I decided to wait just outside the door way, where Logan couldn’t see me, but I could see the door to the dressing room. Y/N wanted me to stay. I could’t break that promise to her.
My phone rang and I answered it, still eyeing the door.
“Ashton, where are you? Didn’t think it would take this long to say good bye?” Michael asked.
“Sorry Mike, something came up. I’m just outside door 3.” I hung up and leaned against the wall. I could see the back of Logan’s head. I already hated him.
“What’s wrong?” Calum asked.
“Long story. But the short version is, her boyfriend is a complete douchebag. I’m making sure she gets home okay.”
“Which one is he? The guy in the gray jacket or the one with the girl? Is that her?” Luke pointed, and I could make out Logan’s green shirt, resting his hand on a hip that wasn’t Y/N’s. I balled my fists.
“Yea that’s him. But that’s not her.” I said. I wanted to punch him in the face right then.
“Man, what a jerk.” Michael muttered, seeing that I was really angry about this. “She must be really something, huh?” He asked. I could only manage a nod. He gave the guys a look, and they all understood. This wasn’t like other blind dates they’d set me up on over the years. I actually felt something real for this girl. It scared me and excited me all at once. I wanted nothing but the best for her, and Logan was far from it.
--
“Y/N, here’s some ice. Did you wrap it nice and tight?” My dance teacher kneeled next to me, checking it out.
“I did, thank you.” I tucked the ice under the wrap and stood up slowly. I propped a pair of crutches under my arms and wobbled to the door.
“I drag those dumb things to every performance, hoping I’ll never have to use them.” She sighed, and I gave an apologetic smile.
“I’ll bring them back on Monday.”
“You’ll bring them back when the doctor says you don’t need them anymore.” She wagged a finger at me, and didn’t let me leave until I promised to use them. She held open the door and I maneuvered my way outside. Once I got my balance, I looked around to see neither Logan nor Ashton in the hallway. Oh my God they’re fighting each other in the parking lot. I thought to myself. Just what I needed right now. I started down the hall towards the door when I saw the green shirt leaning against the wall. I stopped when I saw the red head standing next to him.
I clutched the handles of the crutches and threw them to the ground, the metal against tile echoing, making everyone look at me. Logan’s eyes grew wide and he ran over to me.
“Babe, hi how are you?” He fumbled, but I shoved his shoulders.
“Don’t you dare ‘babe’ me.” I said with a strained voice. I wanted to scream at him, but I lost my courage. “What you were you just doing?” I asked, but I already knew the answer.
“We were just... discussing the rules. For the competition, you know...”
“Hell you were.” I said, tears streaming down my cheeks. I bent down and picked up my crutches, storming away as fast I could. It wasn’t fast at all. Logan walked next to me, trying to reason with me.
“Y/N, please, we were just talking, it’s nothing serious!”
“Were you ‘just talking’ during my performance too?” I asked.
“I was in the bathroom!” I laughed and started slowly up the stairs.
“For my entire dance? Sure you were. You know what Logan, I’m done talking about this. I’m done not having you at my competitions because you hit on the other dancers. I’m tired of you always bailing on me. I’m extremely tired of you never trusting me. It makes no sense that you can talk to any girl you want but I can’t even have a conversation with one guy. Ashton, for example, is a great guy, and he’s acted better than you in one day than you have the past 6 months of our relationship.”
“You don’t mean that.” Logan scoffed, blocking the doorway so I couldn’t pass, at least not while injured like I was.
“Move, Logan.” I tried to push past, but he grabbed the doorframe.
“You’re not breaking up with me.” He said. It wasn’t a plea, it was a demand. I gulped and a rush of fear went through me.
--
“I think she is man.” Calum stood behind Logan, resting a hand on his shoulder. Logan looked up at him, surprised to see two tall guys looking down at him.
“Let us walk you to your car.” Luke suggested, grabbing his upper arm and practically dragging him down the hallway.
“You can’t do this! Let go of me, I’m just having a conversation.”
“Didn’t look that way to us.” Calum said, walking next to him. “Not at all.”
“She just wants to be left alone. Can’t you give that to her?”
“If you would just leave both of us alone, we could talk this out.” Logan argued, pulling hard against Luke’s tight grip. Luke whipped him around and pressed his back against the wall.
“I will never just watch while men like you ‘talk’ to women like that. It’s not cool. You’re leaving.” Luke said through gritted teeth. I could have sworn I saw a flash of fear cross Logan’s eyes, and Luke continued walking.
“Some fresh air will be nice.” Calum said as he opened the door. I waited until he was gone before running towards Y/N. Sh was crouching on the floor, her head between her knees, her back rising and falling with each cry. I sat down next to her. I wanted nothing more than to pull her into my arms and brush my fingers through her hair until she felt better, but she needed space. I waited for her to make the next move.
“Thank you.” I heard her whisper. She hadn’t looked up yet, and I just barely heard it.
“Of course.” I said.
“He has always been jealous, but he hasn’t acted that way in a long time.” She rested her chin on her knee and looked at me. Her once shimmering eyes were clouded with tears, and I felt a pang in my chest.
“He’s acted like that before?” I asked, and she nodded.
“It was a while ago. He apologized after. I should have known though. I’m so stupid.” She buried her face back down and I scooted closer.
“Y/N, you can’t blame yourself for his stupid actions. All that matters now, is that you’re okay, and he’s not here.” She looked at me and smiled softly, and I relaxed a little bit. I wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. She turned and rested her face on my chest, but only for a split second.
“I don’t want to get your shirt dirty.” She muttered, wiping her face on her arms.
“It’s an old shirt.” I shrugged, and she smiled. She buried her face back down into my chest, and I leaned against the wall behind me, holding her tight. I had never felt like I could protect anyone, but right now, I was her protector, and it was the most satisfying feeling I’d ever felt. Sometimes people just needed someone to listen, not help. It felt good to be that for her.
--
After a minute or two, I sat back, pointing at the mascara stains I’d left on Ashton’s shirt.
“Sorry.” I sighed, but Ashton didn’t even look down.
“I don’t care.” He shook his head, and he looked at me. I smiled and he did too, and I felt at peace for the first time in months. “There’s just a little more... I got it.” He took a thumb and wiped it gently under my eye. He wiped the black smudge onto his shirt. “There. Beautiful.” He muttered.
“Thanks. For everything. And tell your friends thank you too.” He nodded and I reached for my crutches. “I better be going home. I have an ankle to rest.” Ashton helped me stand up, and made sure I was okay before walking with me towards the doors.
“You probably shouldn’t be driving home.” Ashton pointed out as we got to my car. “You can’t even walk.” He chuckled, and I realized he was right. I tried to think of a solution when he tapped my shoulder. I turned to look at him, and his hand was outreached towards me. “Hand them over.” He smiled, and I put the keys in his hand. He opened the passenger door for me first, then wandered over to the driver’s side, starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot. “Which way?”
“Right.” I said, pretending to glance down the road, but really studying his face. He caught me though, making my cheeks turn red.
“What are you looking at?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Nothing, nothing at all.” I smiled, looking out the front. He chuckled and did the same. “Left.”
“First I’m stepping on your toes, and now I’m driving you home. What a turn of events.” Ashton said, and I laughed.
“You didn’t step on my toes that much. Left here.”
“It felt like I did. I never really said sorry for that.”
“You’re blushing cheeks were enough.” I teased, and Ashton laughed. It was the contagious kind. “And you did more than make up for it today.” He grinned and I looked back out on the road. We drove in silence for a little bit, me only talking to give him the directions.
“So how long will you be out for?” He asked as he pulled down my street.
“Not sure. I’ll have to see what the doctor says, but it’s a few weeks at least.” I sighed, looking at my ankle. A few weeks was the end of the year. I was annoyed that this was it for the season.
“That sucks. I was hoping there would be more competitions.” Ashton said. I laughed at the thought and looked over, expecting him to laugh too, but he looked serious.
“Wait, you weren’t joking?” I asked as Ashton pulled into my driveway.
“What? No. Why would I joke about it? I actually had a really good time.”
“So you would willingly sit through another dance competition.” I asked in disbelief. It was like pulling teeth getting Logan to go.
“If it meant seeing you dance.” Ashton smiled, and I just looked at him. I thought I had something special with Logan, something worth fighting for. Ashton was showing me just how wrong I was. Ashton was making me feel like I was worth it for the first time in a long time.
“I have to make it up to you. For everything you’ve done for me.” I said before realizing it.
“You don’t have to do anything.” Ashton shook his head, but I took his hand anyway. His eyes grew wide as I did it. Before I knew it, my fingers were lacing in his, and his face was turning a dark shade of pink.
“At least come inside let me buy you a pizza?” I suggested, biting my lip and praying he’d say yes. After a second or two, his hand squeezed mine and he grinned.
“I’d love to.”
Should I just keep this story going on forever?

This guy rocks. The cops? Not so much. He was just just dancing on the street in NYC, and the cops decided he was some kind of menace, forcing him to the ground with no apparent justification. The dancer, Alexander BOK, was participating in a "dance dare" for The Ellen Show. Full video here. And more on the story here via Raw Story.
“Dancing while black” goes horribly wrong for Ellen-inspired YouTube prankster
In yet another incident illustrating the current environment of distrust and disrespect between police officers and civilians, a YouTube prankster attempting to mimic Ellen DeGeneres found himself sprawled on the sidewalk.
The prank, originally created by the always fancy-footed talk show host DeGeneres, is a "dare" to dance behind strangers without them noticing, then acting totally cool if they do, while having the dare filmed. Internet personality Alexander Bok, a man of color, attempted a series of dance dares at Grand Central Station in New York on Christmas Eve. His dancing didn't go over so well when he attempted to dance in front of a parked NYPD van. In fact, cops rushed Bok, yelling, "What's wrong with you, bro?" before throwing him to the ground.
Add "dancing while black" to the list of things African Americans aren't supposed to do. This is what happened when Alexander Bok tried the Ellen Degeneres "Dance Dare" contest near a group of NYPD officers.
