My buddies during this experience made it that much more enjoyable. No matter how hard everyone tried, even Josh our mentor, Kendall always beat everyone to being first in the mornings.

A strong mentor is knowledgeable, approachable, and supportive, offering guidance while encouraging growth and independence. A successful mentee is open-minded, proactive, and receptive to feedback, showing curiosity and commitment to learning. At MPA newer employees are encouraged to always ask for help, and there is always room for their questions. I had the opportunity to shadow a fairly new employee, who showed me how the firm assigned her a project for practice to develop a new Revit skill. Since the project was already completed she also had a point of reference for her work.

A project that inspired me is the 69 A Street project that MPA is currently working on. This project inspired me because it shows how the old can be renovated and changed for a new purpose. Originally, the building was a 3 stories rivet factory. CIEE acquired the building and had an original plan to convert it into a development consisted of five (5) levels of commercial office space with ground level retail and fitness space on the lower levels, with an on-site garage containing 18 parking spaces. Due to the pandemic in 2021 their operations changed, and CIEE decided to partner with a nonprofit to turn it into housing for interns. with part of the construction already completed the gym and some of the original plans stayed. The project is the first building in Boston to use CLT. We had the chance to speak with Nate who is very passionate about this project, and it was an incredible experience to hear about the way the team has had to accommodate for this project, working around the existing conditions, and the changes in the intended use of the building. This project taught me to stay flexible to the changes that present themselves, and to learn to adapt to give the clients their desired final vision.

At MPA , intercultural competence is most evident through a focus on awareness and development. The workplace encourages open communication, respect for different viewpoints, and learning through collaboration. This creates an environment where individuals feel supported and where diverse perspectives strengthen both the workplace culture and project outcomes. No question is too dumb to be asked!

One of the things that I enjoyed about the office culture at MPA was the RFI board, which is updated weekly with different questions that focuses on the life of employees beyond the office. I was delighted to be able to put down my own answer (the yellow line for snowboarding), and it led to entertaining conversations that made me feel more at ease on my first day! This really reinforced the open, friendly office culture that MPA prides themselves in.

Hello everyone! My name is Dana Garcia, I am in my 4th semester of the Masters of Architecture at the BAC. I am from Orlando, Florida but I am originally from Cuba, my family and I migrated to the US in 2010. I want to create and be part of a working space where everyone can enjoy their work, and explore their abilities.
