Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, Majel Barrett guest stars in "Love is a Sad Song," episode 14 of the second season of Dr. Kildare (original air date January 3, 1963).

Barrett plays a magazine writer doing a feature on the female interns of Blair Hospital. Kildare and Dr. Lilith McGraw (Diana Hyland) fall in love after he's enlisted to play her date for a photoshoot, but they decide that their careers have to come before their personal lives. (In a scene that's not easy for a 21st-century woman to watch, Dr. McGraw has to promise not to get married in order to even be considered for a surgical residency.)

Other Trek connections: Jerry Goldsmith wrote the theme music for both Dr. Kildare and Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as music for several Star Trek movies.
